I am constantly amazed by the lights created here...

The lights that I see built and created here are absolutely amazing. I have gotten to the point where I own so many factory lights, that now, all I want to do is have lights built by members of this forum. I feel like I now continuously have something either in the planning stages, or being built… LOL

So I watch videos, I read information, I watch more videos… I am sure you all understand the never-ending cycle. I would love to get to the point where I was capable of doing some modifications myself, but I do not think I have reached that point.

This is a great forum with many awesome people. Keep up the awesome work.

You get there by practice. All of us have messed up $$$ in parts over time or modified the same light again and again…

Yep… wasted countless resistors… once I dropped them on the floor, forget about looking for it…

You won’t begin to improve until you start.

Welcome to BLF Adam.

I started modding lights a couple years ago and I can honestly say that all it takes is patience, a good four letter vocabulary, and an awesome community to learn from. Talk later.

I think the biggest issue for me at this point is just trying to determine a starting point. I have an old 3D Maglite sitting around that I would like to convert to an LED. I considered a drop in, but what would be the fun in that? If I could just build a light that would run off of 3 Tennergy D-cell batteries, and power an LED that would be a great success for me at this point.

Let the research continue.

Read on MacDuff.

I got started largely because the HD2010 I got wouldn’t work right out of the box. I got it working, it quit. I found the next problem and fixed that and then it acted up again. By the time I got that dang light working like I wanted to I think I’d rebuilt it like 6 times! And then Old-Lumens created the Challenge and I learned I could do things I hadn’t even dreamed of, simply by diving in and being stubborn.

Have fun! That’s really what it’s all about…

Well, I need to buy something and change it then. Now the hard part, what to buy and change. Lol

For learning the very basic stuff a P60 light is hard to beat.

It depends on your budget. Do you want something that will ‘wow’ you after your first mod (Like a courui, $28 plus parts), or do you want to get your feet wet with something cheaper (like a P60 or convoy model $8-15 plus parts)?

The easiest mod I’ve done for a 3D mag is XP-G2 on heatsink with a 4x 7135 nanjg driver if using primarily alkaline or 8x if you’re into rechargeables  Using a rebel reflector increases throw. The only place to get mag heatsinks I know of is from H22A over at the CPF.

What hand tools do you have? OL’s modding links thread(stickied in the DIY sub forum) has lots of potential ideas.
