Your 5000K Cree might actually be somewhat 4800K, your DD Nichia might actually be somewhat 4600K.
Rosiness makes light seem colder than it is.
Don’t know if this is your case but it’s possible.
Very interesting point that nobody seems to mention–if one looks at the curves of constant CCT and curves of constant duv on the CIE 1931 chart, they are not perpendicular to each other but leaning in the direction you described. IMO this makes existing calculations somewhat faulty at capturing human perception, and it is much, much more natural to define the CCT of a point by its closest approximant on the BBL by Euclidean distance.
Unfortunately a slightly ill-posed question: different cameras, different settings, and different reference lights all lead to different tint perception, not to mention the even greater differences between any camera and human eye.
Just got a Noctigon KR3 with domed Nichia 519A emitters at 5700K. One reason for choosing the higher 5700K is the option to dedome. I’ve used it for a few days indoors and out and find the colour a bit too stark white.
The hotspot, as such, is handy so I don’t mind a bit more of that by dedoming, and I can always fit the floody optic if it’s too central. Just trying to avoid too much yellow, and definitely trying to avoid anything pink/rosy.
Has anyone had any regrets after dedoming these emitters? I searched out all the beam comparisons I could find but most are lights that aren’t triples, or non TIR so it’s hard to judge.
Popped them off last night, definitely no regrets, it’s a much nicer creamy tint now. The triple made the beam look weird so I put the floody optic in.
