A drop in solution would be about the same price as the whole light, since the Convoy’s are such a low price.

Convoy does sell just the driver for many of their lights, including the SST40 version, but it requires soldering.

If you’re not interested in soldering, you probably have no chance of fixing it. I recommend that you get yourself a soldering iron and learn how to solder, and fix it. But, if that doesn’t appeal to you, the other option is that you could sell it for a much reduced price to somebody here who will be glad to fix it and maybe even upgrade it, while you buy yourself something else.

I have one of these: Yihua 936B soldering station which I bought years ago, and it has been great. I was never able to solder electronics successfully with the cheaper soldering irons that are available. This soldering station is compatible with Hakko brand tips, which are very high quality. But it comes with a nice chisel tip already. I’ve been using mine with no problems for years already.

Soldering. I overcook everything I put my hands on. Bloody clumsy old git.

Nowadays. I use the ones I like.
Stick the ones I bought but don’t like in a box at back of cupboard.
And thank god I’m still breathing.

Mums old electric Frypan is ideal for melting beads. and drivers off.

If you want to salvage it, I have a pill for the S2+, it has a SST-20 4000K emitter and a 8 chip Biscotti driver. No soldering required. Unscrew old one, screw in new one. Tweezers will be successful at that I betcha. Shoot me your address via PM and I can mail it away if you are interested.

Edit: I take that back, it has a Luxeon V2 at 5000K with the above mentioned driver. Sorry I was thinking of another light.

Got your PM by the way. Getting it in the mail today or tomorrow. Only light I had with a SST40 in it was a Jetbeam E20R if I remember correctly. Not sure of the tint on that one but I remember seeing a good amount of green in it. I am pretty sure it was a CW tint so that may explain it.

The Luxeon V2 is quite nice. I haven’t noticed any weird tint shifts or anything like that. If the SST40 throws like the SST20 then the Luxeon is more flood than throw. Pleasant beam. Beam pattern seems to be on par with the 219C. Give or take a pinch.

Thanks again.. I had two coast s2+ lights, I ordered a 18350 tube, metal tailswitch, magnet, and pocket clip. I blew up the SST40 and gave away the standard one. lol I have two more SST40's (5000 and 6500k) on the way now and an Astrolux S1. The SST40 is the best throw I've personally ever owned in an s2+. If I can fix my blown light with something more floody that would be perfect. Thanks again!

What’s fried is likely the driver, not the LED. 8.4V will fry the circuits which don’t have protection against overvoltage in that driver and also the linear FET will attempt to dissipate (8.4 - 3.4)v*5A = 25W as heat, which is not good for a 17mm driver, that’s the same output as a low end soldering iron.

Most likely you can if the LED is not damaged as well (blown wires or burned areas), but it doesn’t make much sense if you are getting a full pill. A SST40 is nothing special at 2.8A, they are used in the model with the 5A driver because they are rated for 6A rather than the XM-L2/XP-L/SST20 which are rated for only 3A.

Your SST40 Convoy S2+ is throwy because of the high output and smooth reflector. If you want to make the beam floodier I would recommend that you try an OP reflector (like in a normal Convoy S2+) or one of the TIR lenses .

Edit:Of course using a larger LED like a 3V XHP50.2 would also make the beam floodier, but that requires soldering and the XHP50.2 doesn’t have the prettiest beamshots. The Luxeon V2 shouldn’t be much different in beam profile than the SST40 (but output will be less due to the driver), the SST20 is the one throwier because the LED surface is smaller

Sounds like I really need to get used to the idea of getting a soldering iron if I want to build my own lights. I'm fairly good with tools but electronics... more specifically microelectronics... are something I have no experience with. I guess it's time for me to learn.

Ah, I see that you were replying to the assumption that the SST40 throws like the SST20 (so the Luxeon V2 would be floodier). It doesn’t, the SST20 is throwier. IIRC According to koef3 tests the SST40 is not much throwier that the XM-L2 in terms of lumens divided by candelas(intensity)

I have never seen an SST20 in person, but I do know that the Convoy S2+ SST40 is exceptionally throwier than the standard 9.99 Gearbest S2+. I'm definitely on the noob side of things with respect to first hand experience. I'm really looking forward to the Astrolux S1 arriving in the mail, I hope I'm not disappointed. The Convoy S2+ SST40 is the best I've seen in an 18650/18350 light. It's plenty throw and floody and I like the temperature.
