It’s routine to spoof a buyer with hand-improved samples to get them to make a large order.

Fenix is made in China along with many other products. So much of decent reliable quality is made in China. Sure, theres the opposite end of the spectrum too. And if youre paying a few bucks for a light with XML2 or better, a decent driver, and optics, heat management etc with good ano and I mean a few $$ (under $10), Im not sure what you should be expecting really.
Not caring? Not caring about the ins and outs of LEDs and torches, sure. But Im not sure they need to either as the market that really cares, is minute. Most people dont know what one light is over another. Do we help? Nope, we argue with one retailer over a difference in price of $0.20. Talk about pressure to save pennies on production.
Its certainly cheap labour and while I dont agree with exploitation, the US again has much illegal labour being utilised to ensure cheap affordable produce, not just gadgets, but food.

Part of the reason many are offended is the attacks are often unwarranted in the first place, and nearly always have racial undertones. Call someone a thief if you must, but then to say Im not dealing with China again as a result is making it about the entire nation of nearly 2 billion people, its now about race or nationality at least. If it was in the US, at say Home Depot do you think that Americans are going to say never deal with Americans again, or maybe they just stay out of Home Depot? Their nationality is being intertwined with the complaints.
Dont get me wrong. If you order a light that claims to be XML2 and has X amps and X modes, with type III ano and AR lens, and a decent metal shelf for heat transfer you should be able to expect those things. But if I paid $6 for it, I dont think Id expect it to be well made and not be best suited as a host. Its the nature of dealing with a country that western nations have exploited for cheap labour, and it has created a low quality version of pretty much everything possible. Quality still exists too though, its just not priced like the garbage. Maybe, people need to consider which pool they are wading in when paying $4 for a torch, shipped across the globe to their door.

my buddies own a gun shop, and customers seem to get amazed everytime they bring out the lightmalls c8 that i gave him.
for the longest time, i was thinking of telling him to order a whole bunch of them, and just selling them for $10 more, and it should fly off the shelves. but now im glad i never brought it up to his attention.

There is a reason why profecional jobs exist in procurement, and QC/QA. The lesson learned is that a venture that can not rely on the mfg to do this work (a reason to have reasonable confidence that items will be to spec and recourse if items are not) will need to budget for the distributor to do it. But it must get done and the cost incurred somwhere otherwise it is not business, it is gambling.
This assumes that spec was developed properly. a secondary issue here was maybe the “pill/driver” spec configuration should have been addressed as a (go no go) requirement.
So engineering may to also have dropped the ball also.
To some degree the OC is exactly who should be trying a like project in the future, imagine the value of his experience stemming from his significant investment made made to date.
Once again, we can see the work that goes in to pulling off a successful GB where additional specs are required.

And I’ll be the first to point out that China produces some great products - it’s buyers who expect great products for small change who are deluded.
That said, a torch that won’t make light is as useful as a wrench made out of rubber - it’s a torch in looks alone.
Another issue I had with this affair was with the chargers offered to me - these were not made by the torch manufacturer i was told but by another party and offered to me by the torch manufacturer.
I wanted a certificate of electrical compliance, which I was given. Checking the certificate’s validity with the certifier showed that the certification had expired and was no longer current - strangely the date on the certificate supplied showed it as being still current.
So who apparently changed the date to mislead me of its currency?
Pushing the issue, I was later supplied with another option with real, valid certification.

i opened a typical shop with flashlites in neighborhood country-in Austria…
many thousands euros in it….preparing officialities,shop,buying the flashlites……after a few weeks of working on it i opened it…for one month…sadly.
cosa after the one month 2 thieves breaked into my shop……they stole it all……including computers,phones…etc.
i lost in a few minuts everything…all the money are lost!!
because the stupidity of the thieves-they did another break in another village…the police found them.the did the second break with my spark headlamps on head…:laughing: idiots…police officers contacted me to ask-if the headlapms are not mine…
and they were mine…so both thieves are now in prison…wankers…its like to kill somebody,then take his phone to call police-i did it…
i lost all,but just little satisfaction-the are inprisoned…so-dont be sad my friend…you are not alone:))))))))

Very sorry to hear about the bad experience. Please don't let people that like to sound like they know it all (such as Streamer) bring you down. It's not practical to perform comprehensive field and simulated field testing for such a limited endeavor. Hell, even the big boys miss important problems such as 400K cars with car doors that fly open.
In your case, it was reasonable to place same faith in the basic design, to check for the normal assembly-line issues, and then perform some field testing on a limited sample.
Thank you very much for this valuable lessons learned thread. It's a good message that I will take to heart. Arm chair coaching you with a hind-sight knowledge advantage is silly. We should be grateful for you delivering your hard won experience to us. Good on you bro.

He was sent a sample to be produced at an agreed price and the sample was the product which was agreed to. If anything changed from what was provided as sample, be it a simple change from a BLACK tail cap rubber protection to a GITD button, its total BS. This means his product will not be able to be used for hunting (glowing)
If the sample was provided and agreed to have orings and the final product is not supplied with it, means its no longer water resistant/proof.
OP got ripped off plain and simple. They lured him into buying something for which they know OP will have no recourse because of distance.
