Took the dog for a walk the other night and clipped a Mini01 to her collar but got to thinking it would be nice to have one custom for her and then thought “what about a contest” with several modders making lights and the winners of those lights(random.org) along with the rest of the members would get to vote on a”best in show” dog light with that winner claiming a prize. I would donate the prize from one of my possible Minmag mods. To make it worthwhile I’d like to see at least 4 mod entries(more would be nice) otherwise I’d shelve the idea. Ideally, there would be a geographical representation so that we could select 1st stage winners from more local members but maybe that’s too complicated. Zones might be NA-SA, Europe/MiddleEast, India/Southeast Asia, Pacific Rim but would depend on entries.
That’s actually a neat idea. She wears a harness since being a sled dog breed she tends to choke herself with the leash on her collar and something high on her back might do but I need help to give this thread any traction otherwise no contest and only one dog(mine) gets a light.
AOCRA (Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association) have a small flasing LED beacon with a magnetic switch.
These are available as part of a safety kit for paddlers. I can't find an exact link but they are about 4cm in diameter and run off a CR2032 or similar. (I've never cracked mine open to see exactly.)
They are attached with a shock cord/clip arrangement and turned on via a magnetic sensor. 2 LEDs, 3 modes and would be perfect for attaching to a dog collar.
There are contact details for obtaining the kit on the aocra website - perhaps someone there could steer you toward the actual light. There are no markings on mine that I can see.
Of course, this would take all the fun out of actually building something........
An AA or cr123 light with lowish output for runtime and ball diffuser sounds great!
Since “I’m the guys with those lights” at work and among friends, they sometimes ask for small, long runtime dog tag light that uses general batteries. Not button batts…
The light would be to help make the dog more visible more than to help her see. Mine is black to begin with. Since she wears a harness her light might best be placed high on her back. Others might put the light low on the leash or as a separate collar. With that BLF Mini flying around she sure was hard to miss but it dangled too low. I’ve seen dog lights for sale but just thought if I can mod lights for me why not for the dog. If the thread fails to get traction no worries it won’t be the first time an idea of mine has fallen flat. :weary: This is just a blatant ploy to bring modders, dog owners, and general membership together as well as do a light for the dog.
Just to make it perfectly clear, any lights made would be given away by the makers to other dog owners via random.org not to me. Forum members would then vote on them to determine who gets the prize That I would furnish. If 4 or more modders post in this thread saying “I’ll make one” then they can make the dog lights while I make the prize. Failure to actally produce one will result in me posting”dog biscuit” every time I see one of their threads.
I walk my dog early in the morning and late in the evening, at night in winter, i’ve tried a lot of led collars and pendants, nothing comes close to the Leuchtie (especially the premium that can use and is regulated with AAA nimh), it’s far from perfect and retarded in some aspect (i should do a review) but it’s light years better than anything else and is the best 40€ i ever spent, completly changes the dog walking experience at night if you leave a lot of freedom to your dog.
It’s a overpriced, glorified hose with 4 leds in it and it’s a real pita to change the batteries but it’s does it’s job much better than everything else i know, i’ll think of reviewing it (both the standard and premium version i have).
I already have stuff to make the prize so I would submit that to the other modders as well but 1 month to six weeks to allow for ordering and false starts starting from when the contest thread actually opens. Still need three more … I’ll bet MRsDNF and TexasLumens could make a run at the hostess with the mostest. Anyone silly enough smart enough to make a piss light should be able to come up with this, right? Match? JohnnyMac? Anyone with a dog and time to waste? Anyone without a dog and time to waste. Maybe DrJones can come up with one for the Euro crowd(blinks with every right front law placement).
Now would be the time to make suggestions or alterations to the contest.
