So I tried to solder leads to tiny magnets, and I did, sort of. I did in fact solder leads to what was once magnets, but the heat killed the magnets, so now I have leads with a tiny nonmagnetic cylinder on the ends.
The goal was to have a tiny and very light charger to bring on very long backpacking trips. The Tindie charger is great because I can change out leads as desired. I can use magnetic leads or magnetic clips.
My way around this is to solder the leads to battery tabs, and super glue the magnets to the other side. The magnets can get super glued inside the clips too.
I was able to do exactly what you are attempting with decent results. I used soldering paste to attach the wire to one side of a small magnet. It melts and bonds quickly at lower temperatures. It still had enough magnetism afterward to hold a connection to a cell...
Use flux and put the magnet on a piece of steel so that he has a heatsink, I have done this too, but some batteries have nonmagnetic sides so I now use a universal cradle.
There are a lot different alloys out there so it maybe depend how good you can solder a neodym magnet
I have tried this trick and it worked for me: 8 out of 8 times
I sanded the side of the magnet that I wanted to solder a wire to, just enough to remove the shiny part. Then I pre-tinned the wire and put a blob of lead on the magnet. It took maybe about 1.5 seconds to finish each soldering with the wire. I would estimate the magnet has lost about, at most, 15% of its magnetism.
When I balance-charge my cells, I do that, stick the outer-most magnets to the crocodile, but have to use some for the magnet/connectors required in-between cells.
I simply soldered thin steel flat washers to the ends of my wires then just use the magnets to attach them to the ends of the batteries. No thermal damage to the magnet and they hold full-strength great. Need stronger contact? Stack an extra magnet or two to each end.
got inspired by this thread last night , soldered magnets directly to the wires of the voltmeasure-thingy I use to measure batteries. No sanding, wires are soldered tight and the magnets still work ok.
I've done the same. Funny how the obvious is not always so obvious.
Another neat tip I picked up (BLF or CPF?) was using heatshrink tubing to hold magnets on pocket clips. Fantastic for my MC11 anglelight and can be useful for a regular light as well. Best part is that it's an easily reversible mod if you change your mind. Just shrink the tube a little at a time and let it cool so as not to get the magnets too hot.
Physical shock can also ruin a magnet. I have ruined them with a blow from a hammer. You live and learn.
On the other hand, I was surprised to find that a friend didn’t know that you could magnetize a screw driver tip by drawing it across a powerful magnet! I offer that in case someone here didn’t know that.
