I came across this by shear chance when trolling Google search. This light was posted here and on CPF. This is the CPF version. Without telling me I deserve everything I get can anyone tell this ignorant old fool what is going on here? Thanks guys.
It looks like they grab threads, take excerpts from them, then link the original content without claiming to be the author. Not sure if it’s illegal, but it’s kinda rude to do without asking.
Thanks for the answers guys. Cant say l'm happy about it but just waiting for a few more options before I do anything rash. It does have its funny side though I will admit.
A few years ago I made a series of video's about how to build a camera obscura. They were intended for use by the pupils in the school where I work. But upon searching for them a year later they were all over the place, incuding a japanese site with japanese comments.
Id suggest its the sites method of gaining ‘content’. Content being the the attraction to the site, thus as Chibi says, traffic, and in the end, advertising/sponsors type revenue…
IIRC, its not modded, its purpose built including the machined body.
Can't really see a concern other than it's a tad rude to not first ask you if you would mind. Your thread is publicly posted and they did link to your original thread.
Very interesting. I can't figure out what, exactly, the site that posted it is even for? A real variety of posts. If I were you I would contact them and ask what is going on with them reposting your post like it was theirs.
Well they did provide a link to the original post. So, that is sorta fair. But, I know the feeling.
A few years ago, I had some of my Photos on Flickr that were copy written, stolen and used heavily in a web & print promotional ad.
Funny part is that the photos were only ok quality. I was taking them for a friend who just bought the boat and wanted to have some pics to frame on his office wall. All done with a Nikon D40X with a 18-55 lens in the middle of a swamp! The did look neat, but weren’t all that.
Another funny thing about my deal was how I found out. A customer who was with my friend sees the picture framed on his wall and says, “Hey, I know where you got that picture”. He goes to his truck and brings in a hunting magazine with the picture used in the ad! We were all like, WTH!!
A few phone calls & emails later, I got a check for $300.
Irony was I would have let them use them for free had they given proper credit!
Edit: here is a link to one of the pics. I had several that were used.
I thought www meant world wide web. It can also be called the wild wild west, to describe all the types of subterfuge that exist out there.
I once bought a book from an online seller, only to discover that this “entrepreneur” had no books, but was actually purchasing from other sellers and using my address as the shipping address. The profits were made from the price I paid being higher than the price he paid. The “entrepreneur” had no “shipping cost”, and no idea of the actual condition of the used books he was selling. He may still be in business, for all I know.
Wow. Odd that they would do that...but I see more and more $*%^&%^& going on with the internet. I had a customer a few months back call me because a light I built for him had shown up on Facebook.... with the poster saying it was his and had been stolen. I had never photographed the light... but the real owner did and sent several images to a relative. We laughed because the customers name was on the opposite side. They turned it over to Facebook but I don't know what happened from there.
The internet is a fantastic tool.... and obviously the thieves and con artist have learned that all too well.
I would make them either pay me...or remove the posting.... or.. pay me AND remove the posting. Not sure you can get that done but they would know my name!
AND YEP Steve... you deserve everything you get!!! Ha! ... Especially the GOOD STUFF! Dan.
That’s called “drop shipping” by the way; many flashlight sellers are actually doing that.
A lot of the copying is to capture clicks — “search engine optimization” crap.
Try searching for your own writing or pictures and see how many sites are above yours in search results.
