I bought a mixed lot of tools and found 12 volt battery packs, the bottom read 18650, so I opened the pack rather easily and found IMR moli 1500mah batteries!Out of a few packs,I ended up with 3 good ones that tested from the pack at 3.9v and after charging,4.19v(at rest).I'm pretty happy and have more to go through, probably end up with a bunch of them.I'm wondering if anyone else had done this and how it worked out.
two days ago I got a laptop battery pack. Guess it more than 10 years old (it Pentium 3 laptop)
Battery pack has 9 pcs MOLI ICR-18650E cells. (3S3P) I think each cell 1500mAH because pack rated for 10.8V 4500mAH
All 9 cells read 3.72V. Charged one cell to 4.2V. end of charge were 4.16V,
I got 940mAH @ 1A discharge (IMAX B6 clone. sure it discharged to 3.1V. not 3V. bad accuracy)
0.5A discharge was 1032mAH.
I found internal resistance of these cells increased due to age. quickly drop 4.1V to 3.6V once 1A discharge applied.
one cell keep fully charged for check self discharge.
Conclusion:
These MOLI cells (cover say it Made in Canada) very good. still perform its 70% capacity after 10 years. may be those cells cycled thousands.
Nice! good to know these cells are decent,I was surprised to find IMR cells vs ICR and when I get time,I will do a discharge test but afaik, these are brand new,Thanks
Aside from testing the discharge capacities in my iCharger, I have been testing the discharge ‘capabilities’ of cells under real load by using my Zebra SC600. I put in a fully-charged cell,
(starting voltages varying from 4.20V to 4.16V, depending on the chemical condition of the used cell), then put on the ‘TURBO’ mode of my SC600. Good cells will finish the 5min. turbo mode run
before it steps down to HIGH MODE. ‘Tired, old cells never finish the 5-minute run, they step-down to High at various elapsed times. Really ’tired’ old cells steps down to High as early as 40 sec.
So in my experience, I don’t get excited if I have cells that charge to 4.17 to 4.20V. Most cells do, but it’s a different story when it’s subjected to ‘real’ load, not just from a hobby charger.
+1
Hi Chibs, it’s been awhile…I hope everything’s fine with you
Hi Tatasal! good seeing you more active here!
Honestly, Im not feeling well at all! (been sick since Monday)
I once opened some laptop battery packs, and salvaged some 18650 from them, they charged nicely up till 4.2V…. and it lit up my flashlights pretty well.
So I was happy… Until I dropped one of them in my 2.8A driver XML…. then I stopped being happy
