so basically i can TIR my S8, because the pill can screw down enough, and i just need battery spacer cuz the pill is screwed in more?
would a floody TIR (or any of them, i mean, which ones?) get rid of the yellow center? its that sft25r 5000k, december 2024 order. its so rosy, i love it, but the narrow spill and yellow in the spot isnt very nice. i still carry it tho lol.
In principle, this is doable! Some people also do it without a spacer, but they will eventually run into stability issues.
A floody TIR would eliminate the yellow center, but also lose you all the throw that the SFT25R offers. I would instead recommend the following:
- If you just want a nice floody beam and don’t care for throw, something like LHP531 or even SFT42R would be more sensible than the stock SFT25R. More output, higher efficiency, better tint.
- If you want both throw and good color (no yellow spot), order another SFT25R 5000K now. The current batch has much better performance and nicer tint (and much lower chance of yellow center) compared to the Dec 2024 batch.
This is the first thing that you said that caused me to chime in to say that I don’t believe this is going to be the best light for you.
I look forward to a beam shot in a couple of weeks.
This is not directed at any particular person. There are multiple terms that get thrown around here that are not very well defined so it’s hard to understand what people are talking about.
nice beam
beautiful beam
ugly beam
almost all descriptive words regarding the beam
useful spill
nice tint.
We have ways to measure some of these things.
Specifically beam angles:
hotspot and spill angles I think should be used on a more regular basis so everybody can follow along. At least when people are talking about wanting or questioning a specific hotspot versus spill.
I carry a good little pocket thrower everyday with a tight hotspot and not a whole lot of spill along with a separate very floody smooth beam. There are times you want one or the other but some people want to carry one light somewhere in the middle to do everything. There’s a lot of room for variables unless people are specific.
Agreed about the importance of being as precise and specific as possible, which is essential for clear, effective communication. I’m often guilty of using vague terms and will work on this; I encourage everyone to do the same.
output isnt the biggest deal for me, esp. if i run 18350 (which i do). so for the size i think a few dollars (literally) to get it to be my waiting-for-ts10v3 tiny edc is great. ty
I put a 4500K B35AM in my S6 and didn’t think it suited the original reflector. The spill is quite narrow and the hotspot quite big; not enough throw to be useful at distance and too small a lighted area to be useful up close. I have since changed the S6 pill & reflector for an S2+ pill and reflector and its been much improved. The extra height of the s2+ pill makes up partly for the difference in reflector height. My final change was to swap the reflector for a TIR which is also great. Either way I would highly recommend the S2+ reflector in the S6 as I think it looks the best and has the best beam, but you do need to take up that extra height somehow
I didn’t know this is possible–do the S2+ and S6 pills have the same threads? And does your S2+ have triangular/trapezoidal threads or rectangular ones?
The S2+ was redesigned a couple years ago, and the thread parameters have changed. Some folks (like myself) own both versions, so it’s conceivable that both are in circulation even if not directly available from Simon.
What hosts/reflectors/TIRs smooth out that dark/yellow center spot of the B35AM?
I remember it bothering me slightly on an S21A
I would recommend a host that is compatible with some beaded TIR.
The B35AM is 3737 and doesn’t fit in a 3535 optic, but will fit in a 5050–centering won’t be perfect but it doesn’t matter as much because the emitter is very floody and the optic is diffusive, smoothing out artifacts.
For S21A, my recommendation is the 21mm S21E 30deg bead TIR. It maintains a very good balance of flood/throw, wipes out the dark spot, and doesn’t generate angular tint shift or other artifacts like some other TIRs.
