Is there a hideous version of the Nichia 219b?

(Sorry deleted above post by accident.) You’re welcome. AFAIK Simon uses the same LED for his flashlights and the bare LED he sells.

You could see in the listing of the bare LED the bin is sw45kD220, so I would think you’re safe. Out of curiosity I’ll check with him. I have multiple lights with this LED so I hope it is.

The only 4500K 219b’s I have are in a D3AA, so I’d guess from more recent batches. Maybe they were old stock though. At ~100 lumens (the 4000K is a single mode around this level) mine read:
4000K 219b: -0.0073
4500K 219b: -0.0108
4200K NTG50: -0.0124

Using the light by itself, especially at low levels w/ sleepy/night-adapted eyes, the 4500K 219b usually looks slightly purple to me. The NTG even more so. I don’t mind it, but I prefer slightly closer to neutral, where the light tends to look more “white” to me, and also looks like a bit cooler temp than it is. As you get more neutral, I find lights look warmer and a bit more yellow. Like a 3500K B35AM looks a lot like incan to my eye, much warmer than it is. A de-domed 5000K 519a looks much more of a crisp and cooler white, even though it’s only 1-200K cooler. There seems to be a sweet spot for negative Duv where it just looks white, and then past that it starts to look pink/purple. Your sw45k sample might be a bit too close to neutral for me though.

good info.. I agree that is excessive

agree..
I seem to prefer duv between about -0.0050 to -0.0080

its great you have reference measurements to help quantify your experience

when waking in the dark of night I like warmer light than during daytime adapted use

here are a couple of my favorites for each of those scenarios:

In the middle of the night the warm light does not look so orange, while the cooler light looks more blue than during the day.

during the day the warm light looks more orange than necessary, while the cooler light does not look blueish, it seems white to my daylight adapted eyes
