is there anyone else that this happens to when they first get a light?

you finally decide which light you want

you place the order with excitement

the order is shipped, tracking is received

you check the tracking at least once a day, or if you are like me you have a tracking app that manages all your tracking numbers on your phone and updates you as soon as a number posts an update

the day before a light arrives, you charge up your batteries, you think about the new light before you go to bed

you wake up, go to work and you are a little bit more positive than usual... because today is YOUR day that you are getting a new light

you arrive home open your mailbox and ITS HERE! FANFARE!

you scurry inside and open up the box making sure everythings in order... pop some batteries in

in the brief three seconds it takes tightening the tailcap

TIME STANDS STILL!!!!!

yes, its that moment you spend wondering.... will the tint be purple/green/blue/poop colored? if its neutral or high cri will it be too orange? too yellow? TOO ANYTHING?!?!?!?!!?! WHAT IF IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP?!?!!? AND YOU JUST SPENT ALL THIS TIME WAITING AND BUILDING ANTICIPATION FOR A NEW LIGHT?!?! WHAT IF?!!?!? AHHH.

no wait. its on now... the light is on... hey.... wait... it looks.... pretty good!... lets shine it at something thats a different color... ok... not bad... well actually its good! yay! best light evur! ermahgerd. crisis averted.

I’m trying to avoid getting to that stage lol.

I did just check tracking on my fasttech order though. it had cells in it……many many cells…… funily enough. the only functional light was a c8 xm-l……that didn’t ship yet lol

OK… I’m clearly not a fully fledged light enthusiast because I haven’t felt like this since I anticipated meeting a woman pre-wedlock. Is this normal or should I bail out of this forum before it’s too late?

s. I can’t afford a marriage counsellor

ken, wait till you get your first “big hit” torch, either one talked up on the forum or a modded light/the bits to mod the light into a serious photon cannon……

you’ll get it, trust me, hell, your first mod could be a 1.4a nanjg into an xp-g host, you get some anticipation, just because its something new to try.

Enough truth in the scenario that I am now a little uncomfortable waiting for the last light I ordered. haha

Hah! Very entertaining - a fun read. But no, I never pay for tracking and seldom even check it once. What I do track carefully, after being burned a few times, is the 45 day PP limit. Wait a minute… Where’s that light I ord… Tick, tick, tick… AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggghhh!

Haha….the only part you left out was the last step, where you throw it in the corner with all the other ‘best light evurs’!!! I’m kidding.

I’m not kidding, that’s why I try to buy from Amazon when possible. :open_mouth: Their return policy is great and if you still want it after 29 days it’s a KEEPER!

Nice write up. Yep I am that way although of course with some places I either don’t get tracking or know that It’s going to be a long wait so I don’t check very often. Speaking of checking I think I’ll go and check on my Shocker order right now. Not in anticipation of turning it on though. But on modding it and seeing how that turns out.

:D

Haha! Great story!

nah.. Its not exactly like that for me.. :p

Lights arrive when they arrive. I always have projects to do/lights to improve, so there is rarely any rush. But I do put my tracking numbers in a track checker app. (Ok, sometimes I do pay a bit extra attention)

Normally I cant wait to tear a light apart once I have it in my hand. Need to find out where and how it can be improved. But first I pop some batteries in just to make sure it worked before I tear it to pieces.

If I have done a larger rebuild (or sometimes just some small basics), and im getting close to the moment where I turn the light on... Well if its light, and bright, and hotspot/beam/tint looks good.. Then im more like the guy in the middle:

After I have gone for a walk with it, or just taken it outside to shine it around. Then Im more like:

:D

This is exactly what I mean/fear. One day I will understand what you are talking about and then I will be sunk without trace!

You guys have problems! Not me though. I'm fine. I'm normal. Now excuse me while I go check my tracking updates for the third time this hour as an update may have just occurred. :)

-Garry

LOL...You've described the process for me but I check my tracking a lot more often. I'm like Garry in that I check my tracking 2 or 3 times an hour just in case there was a recent change in status. I have a tracking app in my phone as well that notifies me of updates but I still check constantly in case it's not getting them quick enough. :p

Very few lights keep the enthusiasm of expectation once they are in hand. Some I play with for a few minutes to an hour and am like "meh". The good ones I'm always picking up and playing with for at least a few days afterwards until the next new light comes along and it all repeats again.

+1

Yes, in the end it is still “just a flashlight.”

I also do not do the tracking stuff, and the rest is also a bit different:

all of a sudden (because no tracking) I find the package with the new awesome flashlight in the mailbox and I am getting all exited. Now it is time to smuggle it in the house without my girl noticing. ..or, she picked up the package, I see it when I come in and try to act casual (yeah, some flashlight parts, few drivers, a led) and toss the envelope in the corner of the desk where my flashlight stuff lives. In both cases I first go to the kitchen, make dinner for the family (while the pot is cooking I take a quick peak into the envelope when no one is watching), after dinner read a story for my little boy who then goes to bed, watch television together until she goes to bed, and then......

(my girlfriend is really tolerant concerning my hobby, but she knows not every package that comes into the house)

Yeah… I’m a bit like that. The anticipation of receiving the light outweighs the actual receipt of it.
Usually, the higher the expectation, the less the thrill of playing with your new light.

I’m a little like that myself. But it’s like crack. I keep needing a bigger and bigger dose.

I notice myself being less and less impressed with lights unfortunately.

I turn it on, and they just don’t wow me like they used to.

The last time i was blown away was the Vinh TN31. I love it more than the FF4.

Maybe i need to do some selling. Save up for a mega light.

You guys are nuts .
The fun is opening the package because I have no idea what I ordered . I never track packages and feel very sorry for people who do .Best just to order and then forget it . The best lights are always the ones you keep coming back to ,it’s the ones we truly love that we continually embrace .Modding just fixes the flaws the maker missed.

Tru dat. ^ I opened a package expecting a meter and it was a Jacob A60…that’s a GOOD surprise!
