Many times it seems that flat tops cannot used in some lights as they are too short. Would it be feasible for the manufacturers to design & include some sort of spacer to bridge that connection gap, giving folks the option to run either battery style? Has anyone made one themselves?

You’ve got a couple options. Neodymium magnets, brass spacer discs (often used to convert flat top to button top) or the manufacturer can use springs instead of not using springs.
