Standard cylindrical cells were not meant to have wrap built in battery management systems (protection circuits), rather the devices which make use of them should take care.

There are some choices if one looks for them. I also like fully regulated drivers a lot, although the mainstream trend only looks into that when forced (driving 2S emitters with 1S cells, for example).

Kidding aside your emergency solution is one answer butt not something ya wanna do if you don’t know what you’re doing. And If you don’t know where to cut off the circuit you’re still SOL - much less if you don’t have a knife on ya.

Butt you could always bite off the circuit like Chuck Norris does. Spit it out, shove in the saliva cell, and continue fighting off the zombie horde. He can do it, hey we can do it. :laughing:

Btw, it kinda would be nice if once in a while a main manufacturer’s employee (not just a third party seller) came on BLF and said……

“We hear your concerns and we’re going to address them in our next generation of UberDuber Commando 9000 series flashlights.”

Or……

“We as an industry of flashlight manufacturers are working steadily towards standardizing the lithium battery size market. Stay tuned.”

I haven’t run into this problem with the cells that I own. I’m glad that GA, 30Q and VTC6 cells are all the same size.

I have heard of some 26650 cells being too large around to be used in a number of lights. One of mine is a pretty much piston fit. Not much room there at all.

The flashlights should be adapted to the cells unless the extra 5mm or a tight fit (weapon lights?) are critical. Protection circuits take the space that they need, it isn’t like they are making them larger because they want to. Flashlight makers know the size of protected batteries, it’s public information.

A $60 flashlight is likely to be a high current drawing one, which means you are not going to want to use a protected cell in it to begin with as that would only reduce current flow.

There’s already a variable length GD SPRING.

A spring introduces a potential current bottleneck. In the race to obtain max lumens, elimination of a spring helps deliver more current to the LED. If you are going for max current flow, you will stay away from protected cells anyway, so it becomes a non-issue.

If you guyz advertise in 2019 that your flash ACCEPTS 18650’s then by golly it should ACCEPT ALL FRICKIN 18650’s, INCLUDING PROTECTEDS, whether they measure out to 18652 or 18654.

A protected cell will be closer to 18690.

Besides, a flashlight manufacturer doesn’t control what cells and what protection circuits are available on the market. New cells come out all the time with varying lengths, depending on what kind of protection circuit a third party decides to add to the cell. If they have to make a flashlight that accepts a wide range of cell lengths, it will be a compromise that many people are not going to accept. You can never please everyone. With that said, there are plenty of lower current flashlights that are not picky about cell lengths - Convoy S2+ for example.

Ya know we’re only talkin about 1/4” of internal machining changes to accommodate pretty much all the varying third party protected cells out there. You won’t even see a change in the overall length of the flashlight to begin with.

Butt now at least ya have an option if all ya got on hand or can buy at that time and place is a protected cell.

Protected cells aren’t trash just cuz they put out less current.

C8Fv2 I just got, charged most of the way just fine in the supplied charger. Wanted to try it in the Cometa to see if a high-drain 2x700 would improve the brightness any. Umm, it kinda smooshed in the positive “cap” a little. Wouldn’t make contact with the charger anymore when I wanted to finish it off the rest of the way.

And too much pressure pushes in on the driver board (spring or not, it’s ultimately pushing on fiberglass). Last thing I want is for it to crack the pcb on the driver.

I have had the reverse problem?

I got several 1405’s on the GB a ways back, plus a couple for customers… I had to use the LONGEST protected 26650s I could, and I STILL ended up brazing a blob of solder onto the brass butt contact with a small TORCH.

yet, I vaguely remember pre-order discussions? people wanted to make sure all their batteries “fit”. kinda silly to go thru a spring bypass to avoid unnecessary resistence? than I do things like use a neodymium magnet to eat up the “slop” because I don’t have XXL length batteries, only XL batteries, lol…

and if you approach the people that manufacture the Uber-commando light?? they are just going to say “this is why we always recommend using THIS battery, purchased from our pro shop… LMAO

and after pricing the LIGHT?? I hardly wanna know the markup on yer special length batteries, you know?

All these cells are designed to be embedded into devices, with sophisticated battery management systems.

The bare, flat top cells are precise and consistent, and designed to be connected together with spot welded tabs.

But then everyone and their dog sticks on button tops, “protection” circuits, re-wraps over the top of the original until it won’t even fit, or just defrauds.

However Flashies and Vapers have latched onto them, and so we are where we are.

The latest “fashion” appears to be the Tesla 21-70 cell. Which I am sure is very good, but the real ones will be hard work for flashies. Al positive contact, recessed, no easy solder blobbing, no magnets. Maybe scrunch up some Al foil and pray for some contact.

It’s amazing that we have come so far with these cells, which were never, and are still not, made for consumer use. That’s only down to third parties who have fixed them up and distribute them to us.
