Japan debuts world's largest indoor farm using LED lights that emit wavelengths optimal for plant growth.

What, … no … carrots

Cheers David

Well, if they can grow plants in controlled environments like that…I wonder what a “space nursery” would look like and if it would be capable of sustaining life/oxygen for long term space missions

After all low power usage (compared to the old VERY high power incandescent) and the ability to create a wavelength the plants use more rather than waste it

All those space movies where some nerdy guy is in the farm section growing plants and whatnot (before the alien eats their face) might not be too far fetched after all

Also isn’t there an algae that can produce refinable hydrocarbons

I’ve read about that before, its a controlled atmosphere room, they release CO2 during the night cycle to about 4x atmosphere levels (which is usually around 400ppm so they raise it to ~1200ppm) then during the next light cycle the plants photosynthesize that back into O2.

Something a lot of people dont know, plants breath oxygen, technically they dont breath CO2 at all. They “breath” O2 via cellular respiration in the roots, the process of photosynthesis uses CO2 and gives off O2 but its the feeding process, not the breathing process of the plant.

Plants “breathe in” CO2 and “breathe out” O2
The C component (carbon) of CO2 is used for growth.
The amount O2 released is based on the growth of a plant
This is all with light shining on the leaves.
In dark they only have regular metabolism, producing CO2.

These LED grow lamps are also popular for growing certain herbs, so i’m told.

If the PWM is wrong, will the epileptic lettuce will be good for seizure salads?

LETTUCE? Please, lettuce stop talking about lettuce.

I’m sure there are bigger setups around. But I doubt those farmers want to be interviewed for it.

Plants dont “breath in” or “breath out” at all…

First off lets look at what breathing actually does for any living organism- The process of taking in O2 and exhausting CO2 is how our bodies cells gain energy, it doesnt matter what type of organism or what type of cell in that body, all cells are powered by the same thing, a chemical called ATP (thats adenosine triphosphate), regardless of how said organism breaths- humans & mammals breathing in and out, fish passing water over their gills, amphibians (which are actually the most similar to plants in how they breath) do it in the cells of their skin facilitating cellular respiration directly with the air (again plants do that same process right threw their roots).

Plants absorb O2 and give off CO2 for the same reason as us, to replentish the ATP in their cellular / circulatory system. The O2 that is given off threw the leaves of the plant isnt involved in the plants “breathing” at all, the O2 that comes from their leaves is purely a byproduct of photosynthesis (which is the process the plant uses to take light and CO2 and convert it into sugar which they eat) so again they “breath” O2 just like us, the O2 they give off is more similar to the methane gases we give off lol, it comes from their “eating” process.

That’s why plants die if you water them every day- it drownds them so their roots (the only place ATP is replenished in typical land plants [aquatic plants are different] don’t touch oxygen)

Now I can skip science class today.
Just kidding.

The Aeon Grow LED grow lamps are also popular for growing certain herbs… those farmers should know about it!

I’ve seen solar powered LED marijuana grows in dispensarys before around SoCal. The buds come out quite nicely and potent
