Not the fast shipping as I have become used to with FT but they are here now.
I thought the D40A would be slightly longer but was happy to find it’s only about 1/8 inch longer than my EA4. My EA4 is the XM-L2 model. D40A is a cooler tint than my EA4. Beam is very close to the same on both lights and I really can’t tell if one is brighter than the other. Switch is better on the D40A of course but if it wasn’t for the poor rubber button on the EA4, I’m not sure I would like one better than the other. D40A does have a moonlight mode but I rarely use moonlight on any of my lights. I like that the EA4 doesn’t need a battery carrier.

Only about $35 after discount so what the heck. Says 1000 lumens and that might be about right as I can see with my eyes. The beam isn’t very good and has rings. Small bright hot spot and looks like it is more of a thrower.
What mainly interested me was that I can use it to charge my phone or Samsung note.
The light holds 3x18650 batteries. Problem is longer batteries don’t fit in the battery carrier. Only batteries that I have with me that will fit are my Eagle Tec 3100s and they are a very tight fit. I need to get a slightly different cord so I can charge the batteries right in the light and won’t have to remove the batteries. I pluged in my phone with a USB cord and it started charging. Could come in handy in the future. Light seems to be solid and nice looking with no defects in the finish.

I really like these lights. Well built and easy to mod.

I bought two from FT. A week later they sent me a message saying that they would be delayed because their supplier sent me them the wrong lights. One finally arrived. Supposedly the package with the other light (and over $200 of other stuff) was returned by Hong Kong customs. Still not here after 5 weeks…

Stock light is around 450 lumens with the 2 amp driver. Mod’d with an XML2/T6/3C on copper Sinkpad/Noctigon and an AR lens it does around 750 lumens.

I remove the battery carrier from the light when charging… if something goes wrong with the charger circuit, it could go KERBLAM! if the cells are sealed in that “pipe bomb” housing.

I ordered my D40A on the 10th of june as well, and I got it today. Not very fast.
Like you Chidwack I also have a EA4 but a neutral. I don’t have any problems with mine either, and I also like my EA4 much. I can’t see any superior quality of the D40A over the EA4, maybe besides the thin rubber covering the switch.
On the contrary I found that the switch on the D40A was badly assembled. The metallic frame around the two switch buttons didn’t fit 100% on the right side, resulting in a slight elevated edge on that side. if I put my nail over that edge it feels a bit like when you check the edge of a knife using your finger nail. Not much really, but in the other hand I could not find any faults on my EA4. I also got a minimal speck in the anodization. But I suspect somebody else wouldn’t have noticed either problem :wink: Anyways, regarding the UI. I like the moonlight mode, on the other hand I find the forward clicky on the EA4 quite neat. I think I prefer the UI on the EA4, but I like both lights and it’s nice to have one cw and a neutral to choose among depending on situation.

Hi Starleaf, congrats on your D40A purchase. Just wondering how would you describe the beam profile of your unit, as compared to what was observed and discussed here :wink:

Well what can I say. Congrats to you as well maybe :slight_smile: You have two lights yourself, and I think my beamprofile is similar to yours. Compared to my EA4W the hotspot is tighter, maybe 1/3 smaller diameter. D40A has slightly smoother beam with a bit brighter corona. However I have not measured but estimate by the looks. A bit hard because of the different tints. The tint of my D40A is very similar to my old KD C8 CW T6. And Even Though that C8 reflector is bigger, the hotspot of the D40A is much smaller, maybe 50%. The reflectors of the D40A and EA4 is almost identical with similar beam profile. Both are nice and not any ringy. The D40A has a pure white light with some lightly yellow corona.
I really like both. I hope it’s water resistant even though the slightly mis aligned metal frame around the switch buttons.
