Johnny Depp Vindicated!

She’ll just “pledge” it to him.

My takeaway: two rich actors were nasty to each other in public, they exchanged some money, and they’re still both rich.

None of this affects my life. Or your life. Why do people care about this?

Pissed me off it got daily coverage.WGAFF

Yep, me too.

I only caught a little bit of it on the news, but it was not a pleasant-to-listen-to story.

Now the Jodi Arias murder case--that was at least entertaining and not too annoying.

I followed that case closely and loved the over-the-top sex and violence.

I think Jodi is a despicable person, but at least her case was interesting.

People care because:

  • It was highly entertaining at points. It was like reality TV with a little more reality
  • It’s a high profile case that shows the dangers of “canceling” people based on mainstream media and social media buzz.
  • It reminds people that domestic abuse can happen to anyone and you should reserve judgement until you know all the facts.

News Channels and websites only care about traffic, not about what’s objectively important.

feh
he was just as big a jerk

Yeah, the start of the end of the integrity of news. Chris Wallace blames his father Mike and 60 Minutes for the mixing of news and entertainment when they realized there was money to be made in news. Before that it was a loss leader for the networks.

I didn’t give a ff ’til I was like, wait, the bikini babe from “Criminal Minds” took a dump in Johnny’s bed?!?

Then as I heard more and more about her hijinx, I was like, yeah, he’s gotta bury her…

Reality TV is awful, though. It’s the slimy bottom feeder of television. Fake dialogue, manufactured drama, and bad acting.

People with a little common sense already know the other two points.

I hate fake "Reality" TV, but a lot of people watch it.

I sometimes like Reality TV if it's actually real.

I know that, you know that, but you asked why people watched the trial and I think my answer is accurate. It’s basically upgraded reality TV because there is actually some reality involved. News outlets saw viewership go up so they gave it full coverage.

Anyway, some of the clips that came out of that trial are so ridiculous that you don’t need to be invested in the trial at all to find them funny.

A small side issue: why did these folks say so many stupid and incriminating things in text messages? If you don't want to leave a permanent record, go voice. Sure, that can be recorded too, but it is not done automatically by the service provider.

It's a shame at this late date that end-to-end encryption of our e-mails and text messages still requires efforts that are beyond the capabilities of most folks. It should be the default.

Another poster above said that we should reserve judgment until we have all the facts - which is in general good advice. But when it comes to the personal lives of celebrities, we will never know all the relevant facts, and much of what we think we know is false or distorted by personal interest of the individuals involved and their agents, commercial motivations of the media, legal strategies and legal restrictions on information dissemination, and political agendas. Even after a jury verdict in a trial involving famous celebrities we don’t know personally, we still don’t know all the relevant facts, and juries can get things wrong.

While I might notice when the personal lives of celebrities spill out into the news, I never come to any conclusions about what really happened and who is really to blame for this or that alleged outcome in their personal relationships. We most often don’t even know all the relevant details of the personal lives of our own family and friends - so there is no way we are really going to know the details of the celebrities’ lives well enough to make an informed judgment about any particular event or events in their personal lives.

All the world’s a stage…………

I think it's no ones business and the culture has become totally voyeuristic. Judging others is a cute way of feeling better about yourself .

At least I never pooped on someone's bed or did coke with Marylin Manson .

So I said to the Lama ...

"Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that going for me, which is nice.

.....who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me.

True. And no thread is complete without at least one reference to “Caddy Shack.” So, thanks for that.
