Just had an interesting dilemma

Went up in the attic today to remedy a vent that was allowing birds to enter. Wore a toolbelt and shouldn’t have because I knew I’d be crawling around horizontally. Ended up losing $35 worth of flashlight and 18650 in several inches of blown insulation. So then I have to decide if I want to write off the light or take a chance on the battery exploding in the future when the voltage drops too low (I may be completely wrong on that). I ended up finding the light and spent more time looking for it than I did fixing the vent. It’s never easy.

Just tell us the truth. We won’t tell anybody else. You were napping up there, weren’t you?

There are many situations where a headlamp is a beautiful thing. Besides cooking, setting up camp, going to the bathroom etc. during the night while camping, I use mine while cleaning the car (makes dust and dirt much more visible, especially in nooks and crannies), and use it while working in places like the attic.

Don’t have to worry about dropping them, and you always have your two free hands. May look silly on ya, but man are they helpful :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways. What light was it that you (temporarily) lost?

I’m interested in how you lost it, I often have to head into crawl spaces, but I use a headstrap and a c8- never had it come off yet, I guess it dropped out of your tool belt?

Not napping but did get so pissed off a few times that I almost passed out. The birds basically severed the duct (same stuff used on dryers) running to both upstairs bathroom fans. Then built a nice nest. Then packed the surving part of the duct with about 3 feet of hard packed straw. Couldn’t get the duct reattached but I did seal up the vent going outside. I also found out the best way to feel old is to crawl around in an attic. I’m actually going be sore tomorrow.

I did have a head lamp on, just not a very bright one. I’ll be ordering a better one this evening. Any recommendations?

It was my Shining Beam Blaze.

It fell out of my toolbelt.

You can leave a lithium battery laying around, slowly self-discharging, indefinitely. There’s no hazard in that alone. I just wouldn’t automatically start using it again after a very long period of time.

What is your headlamp budget? After using budget headlamps, I found that I used it so often and relied on it so much that I wanted something dependable and quality. So I bought a Zebralight H600w. Amazing headlamp. But pricey!

I suppose one idea is to leave the light on your belt on when you go up there - no chance of losing it if it falls out (unless you are really unlucky and it turns itself off).

Oh, I see. That’s your story and you are sticking to it. As I guy who finds the attic to be second only to the barn for hiding from whatever else I am supposed to be doing, I not sure that I believe you. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think that if you can come up with the cash that the Zebralight H51 that it’s a pretty safe bet that you will be happy with the purchase. Seems like it gets lots of love here and at EDCF.

All I can say to this thread is LANYARDS……

Flashlights are great for looking at things.

Headlamps are great for doing things.

Well said. Well said. You are a wise man Chicago.

Now that is some great knowledge.

I always seem to drop a bolt into a black hole whenever working on engines, never to be seen for many months…if ever
