Hi all. I’m getting tired of replacing my headlight bulbs every 12-18 months, so I have been looking to either put in some HID lamps, or try some of the LED ones that are now available. Since I haven’t been able to find much in the way of recent reviews on these, I decided to be the guinea pig this time. I ordered a pair of LED Headlamps on AliExpress about 10 minutes ago. These each have 2 Cree COB emitters that are probably Cree CXA1512s. Similar lamps have the CXA1512, so I’m expecting to get those, although I am hoping for the CXA1520’s as they are supposedly capable of almost double the light output.
My criteria was that the lamps have to be short enough to fit in my headlamp assembly, have active cooling (don’t want them burning up if I leave my lights on), be a reasonable color temperature (5000-6000K), and of course, they need to put out enough light. Truthfully, I am prepared to be disappointed, but who knows? I’ll update this post once I get them in and have a chance to use them. Let me know your thoughts and/or your experiences.
Just click on the words “LED Headlamps” in the OP.
It’s probably more a matter of the two lamps being replaced 18 months apart (hence, 3 years per lamp, 18 months between replacements). In any case, it’s a hassle and the cops around here seem to have nothing better to do than to swoop in and give me a ticket as soon as one goes out. I’m serious about that. One of my headlight bulbs burned out on a winter Sunday evening. I removed the old lamp and put it in my ashtray so I would know what style to get. That night as I was driving my daughter home from a friend’s house, I got pulled over 3 blocks from my house. Even though I knew about the headlamp, had already removed the old one, and had to wait until Monday for the auto parts store to be open, I got a ticket. Jerks.
