Led FLights for front portch lights

Looking for LED light for my front porch as they are a bitch to take down and change. Every light I check is says it is available for indoor use

Right now I have a regular sylvania 60 watt bulb in it there.

get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0U008P5151 mount it indoors, and hool it into your old porchlight wiring.

then get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1GK0P84520

connect it to where the lightbulb socket is currently wired in.

should look like this

——————————mains line going to porch light switch (120vac) connect to -l -n and -g of power box

__line leaving porchlight switch, running to fixture (formerly 120vac, now 12vdc) connect white to + terminal, black to - terminal, and cut off unneeded bare groundwire

remove ac light fixture, cut off bare groundwire, and mount new 12v fixture. connect red wire from fixture to white wire from supply line. connect black wire from supply line to black wire of light fixture. adjust the angle to point it how you like, tighten adjustment screw so it stays set. then go back indoors and mount the power box where it can get plenty of air.

((Note: It does not matter if you connect the old lightswitch in the 120v or 12v line, it will work just as well either way.

(This also works for EU, but you have to flip the little switch on the box that is set for US 120v by default. I have tested this using a EU inverter (Ordered intentionally for testing stuff) and the box powers up fine on 220v too. Just remember to set the switch located on the side of the power supply for 220 and you wont have any problems)

Made by cree. Buy some of these and just change the bulb:

Also available in multi-packs and other versions.

This would be perfect. Thanks

How simple is this to set up? beginner, medium, pro any youtube videos out of on it

no videos that I know of, but I’d say medium. There is no soldering or tiny connections to struggle with, but you do need to have basic electrical skills, and it does require opening up the wall switch and making changes to the wiring therein. just pay attention to the polarity when wiring the DC side of things, and make sure to flip the main breaker when wiring up the AC side of things, and you will have no trouble.

Tmart has a large US warehoused selection of E27 based lights (12v too which is my interest)…as long as you had a ptotected fixture you should be okay. Quality, output, tint varies…you get what you pay for…wondering if Lowes or Home Depot wouldn’t be better choice in the end, brand names.

Tmart bulbs cost about the same or more than the Cree bulb at Home Depot.

Two weeks ago, the cheapest LED bulb I found at Lowes in person in the NE was $15. There are many, many choices at Tmart and others that are $5-10. Lowes or Home Depot ‘online’ I haven’t checked and sales or one offs, who knows…

Anyway, my interest was in 12v off the grid choices, which were too numerous - and of every persuasion, style, tint, claimed lumens, etc.

What I did just see from a local store was a high watt LED that is liquid cooled! And promoted that way too, thought that was kind of neat technology trickle down to the man in the street.

The difference with Phillips & Cree household LED bulbs is that they will very likely last +10 years under normal operation. If you look at the overwhelming customer complaints about chinese LED bulbs (any voltage or version), most of them dont make it past 90 days… under normal operation.

I think I will just go to HD and grab one of the Phillips LEDS. I need something to seriously last a long time and not gamble with Chinese LED bulbs. The front porch fixtures are tough to take down and require a ladder. This is at my Moms house. Saving a few bucks isn’t the goal here. Something that can be turned on every night, night after night, w/o the need the replace is the goal.

I think that I would avoid those new Cree bulbs in hard-to-replace situations. I’ve heard of lots of failures with them. When I measured the temperature of the ones that I bought, the heatsink was running over 100 degrees C. And the electrolytic capacitor on the driver is only rated at 105C.

So if you were to go to the HD website or similar website, what would you recommend?

The light fixtures are similar to this http://www.lightinguniverse.com/outdoor-close-to-ceiling-lights/heath-zenith-sl-4305-4-light-motion-activated-square-outdoor-close-to-ceiling-light_g519950.html?isku=4896066?linkloc=cataLogProductItemsName and are on the top of the porch ceiling.

What kind of bulbs are in the fixture? If they are those E12 candelabra bulbs shown in that fixture, I have had good luck with these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/E12-30-Dimmable-LED-Candelabra-Warm-WHITE-120v-crystal-chandelier-light-/190823593608?pt=US_Light_Bulbs&hash=item2c6df8f688

I’ve had some running 24/7 for three years in some indoor wall sconces. Also have a bunch of them in chandeliers.

Just running a regular Slyvania cheapo 60 watt standard incandescent light bulb. I believe I tried one of those of CFL spiral ones last year and it would not work.

Also looking for a timer for the porch lights or something that comes on when it gets dark.

Am wondering if the LED is the best choice for that style of fixture - sure, long run times, but in an enclosed fixture like that you mention, lots of heat build up if you are trying to get some lumens out on the porch below. The Bulbs.com site I think was the one featuring the liquid cooled LEDs, maybe that would be the trick.

Thinking it might be time to get an open fixture instead and change some of your issues into non issues?

Well here are a couple pics

Yes the Switch Infinia will cost under 20 dollars. Problems is I can’t find them anywhere.

Batteries Plus sells Switch bulbs… but they are more like $45 each.

Good Afternoon,

The Infinia line will not be available until later in the summer. Please stay tuned to our website for updates and announcements as they become available.

I emailed Switch and this was their response
