I've managed to get hold of an empty Skyray 7xT6 host, which I want to convert into a proper 75mm aspheric thrower. I want to use the light for hunting in the 500-600m range, so I want as big and as bright spot as possible, without any spill. I'll switch on my 9xT6 if I need some spill :D
The configurations I've considered:
- The obvious choice would be a dedomed XML2, mounted on a proper heatsink and driven at 6.5A.
- Dedomed XPG2, mounted on a proper heatsink and driven at 5A.Will this really be brighter than a XML2 at 6.5A?
- Dedomed SST-90 running at 9-11A. Will this be brighter than a XML2 at 6.5A?
Is there any other options I'm missing? What about a triple XPG2 (http://www.mtnelectronics.com/opencart/index.php?route=product/product&path=60_62&product_id=82), or 4 x bare XML2's mounted directly next to each other, to form a bigger "emitter", sort of like a big MCE? Why is there no multi-LED configurations in a single reflector or aspheric?
So, what LED would you guys recommend I use in my aspheric thrower?
The biggest reason for not using MC-E’s or other multi-emitters in aspheric lights is that you get multiple hotspots, which just looks kinda weird. You know how on an aspherical you get a square die shape? Well if you have multiple emitters, you just end up with 4 squares next to each other. Kind of ugly.
Here’s what I would do:
get the OshPark 7135-based driver, I’ll put a link to it in a sec. Load it up with as many 7135 chips as you’re comfortable with (supports up to 12A, obviously you’re gonna have a bad time if you try pushing 12A through an XP-G2)—start with the best to end with the best.
Copper heatsink, or a copper cored aluminum heatsink is definitely the way to go. That emitter shelf will not do here.
The XM-L2 will put out more lumens with a larger hotspot, but the XP-G2 will probably have better kcd numbers (smaller die —> smaller hotspot —> more concentrated light) The SST-90 will put out oodles of heat (and a lot of light) but compared to the other emitters, it’s not as efficient. I think that’s sort of something you would need to make the call on yourself. Why not get both on SinkPads/Noctigons and see which one you like?
