Yeah, L4P DTP Copper are said to be the top notch. He offers non-DTP alu boards which are superb too, way better than most non-DTP boards. But sometimes one would want that little edge over what non-DTP offers…

I think testing has shown that in MOST configurations, his MOS-X boards perform at least as well as DTP, and in some cases even better than DTP, because DTP is only great at wicking away heat in the small area of the thermal pad of the emitter. The rest of the board top is heavily insulated from the core.

ALU DTP boards are possible, but for flashlights no one uses them because copper DTP PCBs, while in theory ~2x more expensive, are still just small fraction of total cost of flashlight.

In other industrial areas they are much more common than copper DTPs because cost is very important, and difference in performance is rather small compared to copper DTP.

I have three types of boards:

1.Standard copper DTP - DTP pad in center, FR-4 based laminate on rest of the surface - used when you have only LED on MCPCB

2.mosX ALU-ceramic - non-DTP board, isolated top surface from core, very good thermal conductivity (of course not as good as dtp Cu at very high powers) - since board is isolated,mosfet which generates heat in linear driver can be placed on such board; also it can be used for LEDs which don't have electrically isolated thermal pads (like OSRAM IR, some Nichias...). Also one advantage over DTP is that you can route thick traces "over" LED thermal pads during pcb design, this is very helpful when there is not much space for routing on pcb.

3.Copper mosDTP - DTP pad in center, high performance dielectric isolation on rest of the surface - this is the best possible combination,LED is cooled via DTP pad, mosfet is placed on isolated part of DTP, which thanks to the much higher performance dielectric, is also well cooled. This is also the most expensive solution, currently I have only one board in this technology, 20mm 4040 PCB.

Added new OSRAM LEDs which replace BLACK FLAT - 1mm2, similar or slightly higher lumens, but with much lower Vf and electrically neutral thermal pad (normal DTP pcbs can be used). Also emitting area is pure square,without annoying wire shadows etc.

Preliminary tests show peak output of ~980lm@5.75A, 960lm@5A, I recommend 5Amps in flashlights because cooling is not as good as with bench tests.

As much as I want to own the current champ thrower LED, and put it in a light, I have to admit to myself that I have bought already enough LEDs, drivers, reflectors, and other components, and never did anything with them. They say the first step is admitting you have a problem. I’m admitting that I too often fool myself into thinking that “this time” I’ll actually do something with the amazing new technology that has suddenly come available, so I should buy it before somebody else does. :money_mouth_face:

Well, I’m not gonna do it. I’m going to leave these amazing LEDs for the true modders, who will make use of it. I will be amazed at their creation and wish I had it myself. But it won’t do me any good, because I’m too lazy to build it. :weary:

I know how you feel. I really want to do a full Led4power build (MOSX MCPCB, LD-4 driver, illuminated tail cap) because the components all look awesome, but I’ve got a pile of components I still haven’t used yet.

Still, the OSRAM KW CSLNM1.TG (catchy name) does seem like the perfect answer to the question of what to do with the two Cometas I bought recently…

No complete kit is fine. With Sofirn’s revised driver (the first one had problems) it is still a very good driver and with 6x emitters, it will run alot more efficient if not a whole lot brighter.

the DUV is between: –0.0044 and –0.0043, which will at least ensure the beam will not be green, maybe it will be a bit on the rosy side. I like the pure white of the black flat. Hopefully this is about the same.

The flux bin is 6N
at 1A: min 315 lm and max 355 lm

Compared to the Black Flat sold on Mouser, which is 8M flux bin:
at 1A: min 250 lm and max 280 lm
