I put in 2 new Trustfire 2500mah 18650`s and after a minute of use the light went dim. I could see the emitter was kinda lit but thats is. Everything had the acrid smell of burnt electronics to it. I checked the batteries and the show 0 volts. I charged them up, they showed 4 volts but they wont power anything now.
I guessing the batteries are toast. what kinda short would have caused it? I dont want to thow in another set of cells just to fry those too. hoping I can Salvage the light.
Two 18650s would provide 7.4 - 8.4V, so that’s already greater than the 4.2V in their specs.
Probably, they are using a buck driver, since it’s only got one XM-L T6 emitter, but then, I don’t see how you can get 4000 lumens out of one XM-L T6 emitter.
The CREE data sheet shows 325% at 3000mA, so for a T6, about 910 lumens at 3000mA.
Given that, and even if you could, how much current would you need to drive the T6 to output 4000 lumens vs. 910 lumens?
Here is a better close up.
Seeing I’ve taken it apart, I doubt the seller would offer me any warranty. Im going to look at the P7 driver suggested above.
I know I’m not going to get 4000lm out of an XML but the rest of the light is pretty solid. Oring’s galore, well lubed, glass lens and flawless reflector. It cost me $24 and now another 10 for the driver.
It’ll give me some tinkering to do if nothing else.
Contact them anyway and ask for a partial refund. There is no way that you should have to pay full price for that. Tell them you can send them a picture of the driver and show them the cree specs on how many lumens you can get from a single emitter and that the listing was fraud. Demand at least $10 for the cost of repairs. Most likely they will issue you a partial refund rather than ending up with negative feedback and a paypal claim. If they will not work with you file a claim with paypal and contact them again. Still not working with you then escalate the claim to a dispute and you will win.
As far as drivers to choose from there are lots of good drivers that you can find for it, take your time look around and feel free to ask for suggestions.
There’s another thread on modding the sense resistor for the KD driver and somebody mentioned that I think lightmalls has it for under $7 with various discounts for bulk.
Eww. That driver looks terrible… Nothings even and the quality looks pretty bad.Not so much that its burnt, but just look at it. It’s asking for damage
Rest of the light is pretty cool though, I like it.
what size is the driver? as said above, the p7 3a 3 mode is a good driver, I get mine from lck led and I do like them, it certainly looks like a good mod host with potential.
If it is a 20mm driver and the cavity is big enough, you could just go real big and go for a copper mounted xm-l2 and very high output driver.
I’m kind of tempted myself tbh but I have a few 2 cell plunger lights now and a mod list a mile high to be getting on with lol
And a quick look at their ebay store suggests they probably don't even know themselves what they are selling. They certainly don't specialise in flashlights.
I'm sorry OP, but this is just another example of a seller unloading any kind of junk onto someone who doesn't know any better. File a Paypal claim and never do business with them again.
Spend some time in this friendly forum, read through the threads, ask the members for recommendations and then try again. (And maybe lose the Trustfire cells in favour of something a bit safer.)
