Like M21H TIR XHP70.3 but more throwy?

Hi everyone, I have been using my Convoy M21H TIR Linterna with XHP70.3 HI R70 flashlight for a few months now and loving it. However, I do wonder if there are any other options with similar beam profile but are more “throwy” and less “floody”?

A more throwy beam will not have the same beam profile.
That said, you might be interested in my two favorite emitters.
The LHP531 is more throwy than the XHP70.3 HI.
If that’s not enough throw, there’s the SFT40 emitter.
There are emitters that throw even further, but they do not have much usable spill. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks! Yes, useable spill is important for me. I get so used to the M21H that I can’t stand my Nitecore MH25 Pro anymore.

I only like the beam profile of the 36.

I’m not sure the question is clear.

Do you mean more overall output with the same beam shape? I.e maximum distance is greater because there’s higher output?

Or do you mean you like the “blob” of light a TIR lens produces Vs a reflector so are looking for a throwy TIR lamp?

I mean similar output but with higher intensity because the beam is slightly more focused?

All rough numbers/comparison:

  1. Nitecore M25H Pro: throw=705m-124 kcd per zero air review (small hotspot + spill).
  2. Convoy M21H with XHP70.3: throw=259m-16 kcd with 12 degree optic, r9050 (vs your r70) per 1lumen review (larger & diffuse hotspot - good for close range work).
  3. My Convoy M21E with XHP70.3 r70: throw=518m-67 kcd (medium hotspot + spill).

Going from Nitecore a thrower to M21H a flooder probably is like stepping from hot shower into a cold jacuzzi. I understand why you are yearning for more thow.

A second vote for Convoy M21E with LHP531 (espcially since you already have XHP70.3 r70 - welcome to the hobby, collect DIFFERENT LEDs :+1:. ). It’s likely what you are looking for, a more throwy M21H.

Thanks! Wow, the M21E sounds like what I am looking for - somewhere in between the MH25 Pro and the M21H! I will check some youtube reviews and decide!

Thanks for doing the math, i just happen to have this screenshot from when i was curious about the candela for it about a month ago. It’s not too bad while still maintaining a good amount of useable spill.

M21E (and M21F if you prefer a smaller head/reflector, with slightly less throw) are IMHO Convoy’s best offering for an all-around light, walk light, or gift light. It has medium throw and great useable spill. The Orange Pill reflector results in an excellent beam without ring artifacts. I recommend it extremely highly.

The match with LHP531 4000k for example should be very nice. It had better be because it’s the next light on my wish list.

I couldn’t find any M21E vs M21F comparison videos on youtube.

Maybe I could help you here. I also have a couple M21F’s besides my 5 M21E’s (yeah I love these Covoy hosts). This picture was taken a couple years ago when I was fairly new to the hobby & without measuring devices, but still applicable today. The main difference between M21E and M21F in real life use:

1. Size: M21E has a larger top. M21F fits in pockets better.
2. Throw: M21E throws a little further. With identical GT-FC40 4500k (lower output and throw than XHP70.3), the numbers are: M21E=324m/26 kcd vs M21F 276m/19 kcd.
3. Spill: M21F has brighter spill.

Given that these are medium throw lights, I like more throw, so that’s why I prefer M21E, but YMMV. Both lights are newer Convoy designs and were released about the same time just a couple years ago. The internals (driver etc.) I would assume are identical. IMHO it comes down to size, the larger top of M21E vs M21F. If size doesn’t matter, I would pick M21E.

In real life take 1/2 or 1/3 of that throw number to be usable, and in a clear air/weather condition

How did you measure the beam angle?

I’ve got a C8, which uses the same reflector as M21E, and got around 60 degrees, not 80. This is also consistent with the reflector’s sideways dimensions, being close to an equilateral triangle.

Interestingly, Convoy’s page for the reflector lists the reflector height as 31.5mm, which is incorrect. The true height is around 34-35mm, but I don’t enough enough measuring precision to determine the next few digits.

I just used ruler and measure the two lines that formed the border of the spill. I think someone asked me to measure it that way. Is that not correct?

I think the tricky thing is that the border of the spill is not a pair of lines, but a single hyperbola:


What you want to measure is the angle between the blue lines, but you only get to observe the red curve. If you measure the angle too close to the vertex of the red curve, as you can see the resulting measurement angle would be too wide.

I couldn’t think of a nice way to do this measurement, other than performing the measurement very far out, where the red curve becomes very close to the ideal pair of blue lines. Or deducing the beam angle from the reflector’s geometry.
