Ok, I like games, Chess, checkers, rts, rpg etc… besides flashlights here. Well I’m been trying to find out the English name of this game being played in SE Asia. I came from an Asian background and it was very hard to explain alot of the games to my western friends. Especially those who really are into and and was looking for the names. I failed them.
It was always in my mind to find out the English equalvent or the ‘variant’ names of a lot of games that they saw being played. For example, we used to play ‘ka taoh’ which, I found out years back was a malaysian/thai word for ‘sepak takraw’ aka kick volleyball. I’m sure a few of you guys know what I mean back in the day if your high school friend played on the ‘hacky sack’.
Another was, the infamous ‘chinese checkers’ as my western friends used to call it. I found out it’s Malaysian/Singaporean Draughts. Played just kinda like checkers or more precise ‘international druaghts’, but you get flying knights & penalty for not taking pieces which is called ‘huffing’. One of my uncle was unbeatable in his day.
Anyways my last quest is for this childhood card game. Only played by 3 people using the 52 playing cards. Players are dealt 10 cards if I can recall. The goal is to get rid of all your cards. The dealer gets 11 and start by discarding 1 card out of his hand. The game goes counter clockwise to the next person if he doesn’t want the card he take a draw from the community cards (remaining cards).
The goal was to create ‘flushes, straights, 3 or greater of a kind etc…’ sort of like poker. Once you have a set that is 30 or greater it could be place face up in front of you or held later til u won or til second round. But if it’s your turn, and you won, u must still discard a card. So if some discarded a ‘winning card’ or you withdrew a winning card from the community pot, you still had to withdraw one card to keep the game going. If game goes to 2nd round any 3 card combination can be set down and added at any time by anybody. Last player loses game and has to deal or player with the highest card value.
There was a lot of strategy like, throwing the ‘game’ by throwing off players and doing random stuff and waiting for round 2 to fill other player’s cards. Another was the low card strategy. What I like about this game was the accuracy and intuition a lot of players had on who had what cards by their discards and by read from other player from seeing a card discarded. Often players had each other cards, which was quite funny. Also nice to see the lay down of hands from those 10 card straights and flushes.
If anybody got a clue of what poker variant or card game that was please tell me.
