Cheap China tablets usually have poor display resolutions (pixel density). Unless it is a xiami pad.
While I don’t have a lot of use for a tablet, the Android TV sticks are pretty nice. I have a mk802 iv at the moment. It needs to be reflashed with newer firmware, but otherwise works pretty well (as far as Android goes anyway; it’s extremely awkward about network filesystem mounts).
the Xiami says “Android” but not whether it’s the known insecure (versions up to 4.2) or the maybe-secure (4.3) version.
It’s a FAST little tablet…that link will help you root it, then you can uninstall some of the crap APK’s and unlock it’s full potential
My daughter video streams using skype on hers and many other things, the biggest reason I went for it…the 1gig RAM…512 is soooo sluggish now with larger Android releases, that and the quad core of course

I have a Nexus S phone (2011) and a cheap Aldi (Bauhn) tablet (2012), both of which are giving me regular low memory errors due to the limitations of the 1GB system partition.
This is becoming more and more of problem with the lower end Android devices. When the free storage space gets too low, functions such as email retrieval and installation of updates start to fail.
I am not a complete novice with this stuff and regularly do things like clearing the cache and so forth. I also move any apps (that will support it) to the USB storage partition.
As far as I can tell, the main issue for me has been the number of large non-removable Google components that have been added over the past couple of years. In addition, I have yet to find any reliable way of increasing the system partition by taking space from the USB storage where I have about 12GB free. In a Windows environment, this would be simple fix but the Android threads I’ve researched all suggest that trying to root and repartition is likey to render me a brick. (I’d love to hear from any members here with more experience.)
As I understand it (so far) newer versions of Android devices may be able to manage the total storage a bit more usefully so as not to run into these errors, but I don’t think that is common yet on the budget models.
Of course, you can always make sure not to install too many apps - the generally accepted answer to issues of insufficient memory always begin with “remove apps that you don’t need”. But this is not an answer that really addresses the problem. I don’t have large numbers of big apps that I can do without, nor do I have many games. I do experiment with quite a few apps as I teach Android/iOS tablet/phone classes, but I don’t consider that I have filled my phone or tablet with lots of stuff that I would be happy to delete.
My feeling is that your neice will probably be like most kids (age dependent of course) and want to install everything that catches her interest. If you go down the cheap 1GB path, you may find yourself with headaches and chasing a replacement sooner than you think.
Yeah I looked for that too…bummer…would have been cool to have CM10 on it, at the very least CM9. I put CyanogenMod on our old Nook Color, was cool having a full blown tablet in an e-reader….unfortunately it got slow, and just wasn’t up to snuff anymore

Try Greenify (need root) on top of Fast reboot. I use both on all my devices. Greenify is the gem though, you gotta try it. No more items starting up by themselves, running on background etc. But the cool thing is that the apps are still there ready to run when you need to.
The paid version (I think it was $3) adds ability to greenify system apps (use it only if you know what you’re doing) to clean all those preinstalled cr@ps from seller. Really nice.
