Some good comments. They call it knife survival, because you’re going to get cut. I like knives, but I would pick running first and an improvised weapon (stick, bar stool, etc) if cornered. A friend (bouncer) once told me he kept a pocket full of change to throw in someone’s face. That might get you out of the corner and running…
At real close range, I am more afraid of a knife than gun… of course I’d probably poo faced with either in a real situation.
It’s a Natural Law — no judge required — predators don’t prey on the strong. Throw in a heaping dose of “friendly and garrulous” and you can walk safely in some amazingly scary places. Worked for me, all my life.
But wanted to ask if pepper spray is legal to use or a taser less use of lethal force ,that being said I was pretty impressed with the martial artist and using the blade as an extension of his technique I studied Bujikan martial arts for a while and emphasis was always on technique and the weapon was just an extension of the body.
Wow guys, thanks for all the useful input! I was kinda busy recently and didn’t manage to response to you all.
I was actually just wanted to buy a good knife but this discussion turns out even more interesting. Okay, here are some of my humble views:
As for the Karambit knife, well that is just one of the good videos I found and shared at here as an example, just to let people understand what kind of knife and application am I looking for. Of course it can be any regular shape of knife and yeah I am going to use it on other daily applications or camping use too, not just for cutting people flesh, man…
2) I am not expert in martial arts, but I did practice martial arts for few years, did participate in tournaments and learn some self-defense techniques. Some people worry about being disarmed, while most people don’t know about the reality of knife, and I don’t blame them, instead I blame on those instructors who taught nonsense self-defense classes and misleading their students that knife attack can be deflected by simply blocking or grabbing… NO, it’s not that simple. Ask your friend (untrained) to hold a red marker pen and just randomly wield at you aggressively while you trying to block it, you will understand what I mean. It takes an Aikido expert to be able to deflect a knife attack from an untrained person, while I don’t know what it takes to defense against a trained knife attacker like from a soldier. If you give me a choice to fight against a big guy without any weapon or a smaller guy than me with a knife in his hand, I would rather pick the big guy.
3) As many of you have pointed out, yes beside buying a knife for self-defense I want to start practicing how to use it as well. It is new thing to me and I do know that I cannot have the false sense of security just with the knife in my hand while I don’t know how to use it.
4) Some of you mention about bat, stick, retractable baton… etc. How are you going to keep them while you are doing your shopping?
5) About the law concern, yes that is something that I need to look at, and thanks to Chloe for providing the link. Will read through it when I am free. Another thing about law concern is since I am looking for a small pocketable knife I will keep it inside my pocket, and AFAIK I never heard of any police officer would suddenly check on you unless you are very suspicious. In addition to that when you are really in distress situation, live or law, which one do you choose? And as for knife, you can hurt the person by slashing his arms or legs but avoid cutting his throat or stabbing into his organs, that will leave him alive but painful enough to leave me alone.
6) Guns - Well, guns are strictly prohibited in Malaysia unlike in USA, so it is uncommon to have normal citizen carrying it. However criminals still able to get themselves guns through underground market, smuggling or bribing the cops… whatever, I have no idea how did they get the guns but seems like nowadays bank robbing and other crimes are done not only with handguns but with rifle or sub-machine guns in Malaysia, can you imagine that can happen in a country which guns are “strictly prohibited”? My other thought about this is whenever a guy walk upon you with a gun in his hand, in that moment all the short knife, long knife, baton, running… are meaningless! Your only chance is follow him (might not be just asking for your wallet nowadays, could be worse), or having another gun in your hand to make it 50:50.
7) After all it’s like what you all suggested: stay alert, avoid the situation, run. Yes I can’t be more agree with it, and I always advice my girlfriend to always “have her eyes behind her head” when walking on the street lol. My only concern is what if you don’t have a choice?
Keep your opinions and suggestion on knife model coming, cheers.
Not sure about knives for below $20. Personally I've found cheap knives to be cheap for a reason, but I guess if it will only be used strictly for one purpose, and never anything else, it doesn't need to stand up to a lot of use.
Basically anything with a 3-3.5 inch blade or longer should work.
There are tons of cheap knives from china out there, the problem with them, is they really will not last, and often have minor defects out of the box. For an emergency situation, you want something you can rely on without question, so it may make sense to spend a bit more.
I can't find it, but the knife I would suggest as all around good, but reasonably priced is the Gerber AR 3.5. The 3.0 version is much smaller.
I'm a sucker for Kershaw knives, and I carry a Kershaw Brawler.
Even though it's produced in China, I have never seen a Chinese source. I don't know the best place to get one shipped to Malaysia. You can get one on http://www.ebay.com.my, but shipping kills the deal.
There are few members mention about pepper spray earlier, and yes they are kinda girly to me though I do not deny their effectiveness.
I think another option for this is shining my 1000 lumens C8 into their eyes, and then I can use my flashlight bezel to hurt them. The only problem is what if my C8 is switched on in moonlight mode (converted into Qlite driver) in that split second, do I cycle through the modes until it reach high mode in front of my enemy then only shine it on him? S)
True! Just rem not to rub your eyes after that. In fact, some victims have been robbed by criminals using chilli powder even in Malaysia. Here’s a tame demo by some kids :
Yes I’ve heard about bad guys using pepper to rob before. You see a pepper spray or similar thing fall in the wrong hand can used as a crime tool. The law in Malaysia is basically being used against the good guys like us by some corrupted cops, but doesn’t work against bad guys. People just have to watch their own butt here.
Many blades offer a legitimate self-defense option, just as a firearm. Anyone with a gun can be as dangerous to themselves as to the attacker. The knife training is up close and personal. Also, if you have ever seen the aftermath of a knife fight you know how ugly it really is. Kavmagra is the leading form of self defense in a street situation. Let the instructor know your intention is to eventually train with a knife and why. That man or woman is the expert on the knife or knives to carry. Most of the time they will suggest carrying 3 or more individual blades and suggest a good blade for your budget.
Also, remember your goal is to escape the situation. One swift cut in the right place (and sometimes any place) can throw an attacker into shock or be enough of a deterrent to break free and run. Other times you will need to make more strikes. Let a pro lead you. I have about 3 years of knife fighting instruction, but I do not know enough about you physically or mentally to provide personal direction. Get some training, take it seriously and follow your instructors lead!
