New here so if this is in the wrong place I’m sorry!
I’ve just come across the Convoy C8 and I’m really loving the style/shape/size and want to know what variant you would recommend if I’m primarily looking for great throw?
Currently I’ve got a Solarforce L2P with XP-L V3 p60 drop in and while this is my first LED flashlight I want another… more powerful than the Solarforce!
I’m not skilled in soldering or circuitry so my options are buy something pre-built or spec something from mtnelectronics.com and get Richard to build something!
Can you give me some suggestions? What range would the above linked flashlight be able to throw? Should I look at de-doming? Which LED would be the most powerful?
Thank you in advance, I really appreciate any help or suggestions!
If throw is your main concern, an XP-G2 will do better than an XM-L2 or XP-L. An XP-L will be brighter overall, but not quite as much throw. Take a look this one
(sold out for now)
MTN does a great job but it is US based seller so shipping from US to Scotland might significantly affect the price.
I would personally go with BG or directly buy from manufacturer and then do a dedoming, it is a necessary step to get more throw and sooner or later you will want to try that so why not start right away
Didn’t catch the Scotland part…
Dedoming isn’t hard, but you’ll have to be able to solder at a basic level to get the LED out. There’s a first time for everything!
I’m sure I could do some simple soldering. I’ve read that Petrol is a good way to get the dome off?
What would you recommend off BG? The one that I linked initially?
Yeah shipping to Scotland from the states could be a little pricey!
Cheers
if you are looking a good thrower in C8 style and you can build it your own,try c10 with xp-g2 s2 on copper pcb and direct driver ,use those to center the led and you are on budget
To avoid complications I would go with XML2 U2-1A SMO version from BG, disassemble it, unsolder the led, dunk it into petrol for a day or 2, carefully remove dome and put it back in C8. Copper star is not necessary when using stock driver and modification on driver (adding current regulating chips) will just complicate things, also reflowing a led on copper is not that easy for beginners, it’s not hard but you don’t want to do that if you only have one emitter at hand. Or you could buy this > http://intl-outdoor.com/noctigon-xp20-mcpcb-cree-xpg2-s2-2b-led-p-788.html and just swop it into C8 instead of XML2 without changing the driver
If you want purpose built with the modes you want…go with mountain…he takes the stock ones, builds them perfectly, then programs the driver with what modes you want at what power level you want. You won’t get that with stock rigs…sure they cost a bit more but you get what YOU want
If you don’t like the flashy modes, and want very low to wide open modes, go with the 4 modes option
