Lux meter - $7 shipped

Hi Guys,
I don’t know much about this meter, but it looks quite similar to one I’m using in an illumination class at school. For $7, I think I’ll give it shot. At the very least, it could be used in reference for ceiling bounce, etc…

Only goes up to 50k lux so with throwers you would have to step back a bit.

AU $14.02 shipped to Australia. It’s about the same price on eBay for us (same model).

I have three Chinese lux meters 2 (identical models) are spot on compared to my Amprobe unit. One is 20% off…

Can you say which ones? I’m thinking about getting a cheap but reasonably accurate light meter, and would love some recommendations.

link takes me to the Amazon page where the product is “Currently unavailable.”

???

There were only 9 left when I looked, so they’re probably sold out now.

I got them off of Ebay. The good ones were model LX-1010BS (with the small dome, there are some shown with the bigger dome which my poor quality one has). When I got them they were $11 each! That seller no longer has any listings. Also, being Chinese products, you never know what you’re really gonna get…

@texaspyro: Is this the one you’ve got? I think of getting one of these …

Not that it means much, but that’s the one my school issues to the students for a course on illumination. I couldn’t tell you how accurate it is, but it’s good enough to use as a reference.

I have been looking for a decent lux meter and this thread finally got me moving. A lux meter is like a speedometer. What’s the point of working on or buying a fast car if you don’t know how fast it is or how your mods affect it? Well, same thing applies to torches.

Besides the higher lux capability the selller offers a 36 month warranty - that and the positive product reviews on Amazon, his number sold, convinced me the extra $$$ in the long run is worth it. If I get a torch that exceeds this unit’s max then I’m still pretty happy. I just didn’t feel a 100,000 lux limit will cut it any longer. Not with the torches coming out these days.

Yes, that looks like it.

Just increase the distance to the meter to handle higher luxes. If you double the distance to two meters, quadruple the reading (light falls off at 1 / d^2) to get the equivalent at 1 meter.

…….then wonder if I brought a tape measure, then walk back an extra meter when I don’t have to. :cowboy_hat_face:

Over $100 in your pocket…

I guess it depends on what you’re planning to do with it. I just want to use it for comparisons of lights and before/after mods. It doesn’t need to be accurate to be used as a reference.

Just like using a scale for body weight. If you want to know if you’ve lost weight, you don’t need to know your exact weight.
However, if you need to make a weight class in competition, then your scale better be accurate!

I also have that one, it’s pretty good. They were <$20 on ebay. Only issue is curved edges so hard to set flat on side.

Regardless of whether it’s accurate, if everyone gets the same our measurements will at least be precise (ie consist from member to member).
