Made a brass pill...

someone else posted about using a brass fitting as stock to make a pill…. i found 2 sizes i liked and this is the larger of the two. I didnt make it to actually fit anything, just wanted to make it see how it turned out.

i’ll have to start poking around, see what one of these buggers would fit into and be useful…

Used a couple of these , although mine were solid brass, and built up from there. 2 Convoy S3 triples and an M1 quad. Pulled them from shower rough-in valves. They worked well…

Will this fit a P60 or similar light? Need to find a brass fitting @home depot that comes close to a Solarforce cavity

Why are Brass pills popular?

Brass is almost as heavy as Copper, but conduct heat and electricity much worse than Aluminum or Copper according to my lookup:

Brass is used generally to fill a hole where heat conductivity is bad to start with. Hollow pills are one example. It’s not ideal but a lot of times, much better than what is there initially

for about the price of a pack of smokes, i got 2 or 3 little ones, and 2 or 3 bigger ones. This was basically a “dry run” and i can make 4 or 5 more in these 2 sizes, practicing.

i honestly dont know the dimensions i am shooting for, or i probably would have tried to make a solid p60 pill. I surely HAVE an old p60 module that died, tore apart here somewhere I could use for a model? i honestly dont know where it got to. I cant find “blueprints” of it anywhere.

next order i get in from a light place, i will pick a couple empty p60 pills up, i wanna put together a few for myself and i want several empties laying around to use as a model.

well, did not find my empty p60 pill? but i did find my old 501b body, head, and tail cap/switch. Missing only the lens. Story of my life… maybe if i had went looking for the 501b, i wouldnt have found it, but would have found the empty p60 module? ha ha.

Don’t forget, that’s just the starting point. You can build up from that with various other sized copper fittings and solder, as I did building my triples and quad. Took some time but they worked out very well. I mixed copper and brass with solder, trim to size and then polished. Got the idea for those here.

I believe brass is easier to machine than copper. Ask someone who has turned both they will tell you copper “smudges” no excuse not to use aluminium though its probably the easiest of the 3.

Also brass is used on electrical fittings as it is stronger than copper but still retains good electrical conductivity.

I would say Brass is a POOR conductor actually, at least from the specs I found, Aluminum conducts electricity (and heat), over 2x better than Brass, and Copper conducts almost 4x better than Brass.

Copper is the best in all cases but a small brass plug surrounded with a lot of copper plus solder seems to work well.

adding copper around brass does nothing to help the brass move the heat to the copper… the brass is essentially an insulator. The Copper conducts heat more than 3x faster than the brass, aluminum conducts heat almost 2x faster than brass. It would be better to wrap Aluminum in Copper, than to wrap Brass in Copper, as far as thermal conductivity…

there must be reasons why they dont just make the pill out of Copper… not sure why

I already pointed out above. Copper is harder to machine than brass and brass still has an acceptable electrical/thermal properties
