hotwire! get some sort of adapter tube (pvc or something) stuff a handful of li-ion cells in that beast, and add an impractical bulb to the mix
You can even use a normal driver and nimh, from 5 cells you get 5-6V that would be enough for the 3T6 driver and an overdriven XML or even 3 slightly driven XMLs…
I just checked the 2D would be a bit cheaper for me, tempting… As its almost as a used 3D would cost here. I wanted to make a shorty forever…

ive got a 6d and a 2d still doing nothing lol… everytime i build a maglite it ends up costing me like $200 haha
Standard Li-Co 18650s are probably not the best idea for a hotwire. Voltage drops with use. And protection will kick in at the current draws required. MUCH better would be to run 4xLiFePO4 32650 in the light. 12.8v, high current, flat NiMH-like discharge curve, and no adaptor tube required. Not to mention pretty decent capacity. Oh, and 5D is the PERFECT length for 4x32650.
On the other hand, even a Li-Co 32650 should provide enough amps for a pretty good hotwire.
I just noticed that the one from Wally World ships for free, too (here in the lower 48, at least). And given that the one from Amazon ships in a Kaidomain-ish 2-4 weeks, it can’t possibky take any longer to come.
