yabba dabba doo
I have a couple that cost me a lot more from the camping store. They work really well, if you can’t start a fire with these it probably cant be lit.
HAHAHA!!!
Rocking funny.
I’ve always wanted one of these. Thanks for posting!
ordered two, thank you for the link!
I have a couple of those and they work great. I just ordered another 2. :)
I actually got a Firesteel.com Gobspark w/lanyard for $13. But it’s definitely worth the money. When you scrape it, CHUNKS of metal fall off and ignite; not just shavings! And these travel for 2-3 seconds on a good one before they go out. I can shoot them 5+ feet. Everyone I’ve showed it to has a fun time using it. I can actually take a piece of printer paper, take one scrape and start the whole piece of paper on fire whole.
I finally decided to get one of those “mag bars” for $3. I wouldn’t recommend buying one though. The “pure” magnesium burns, but produces a ton of this black ash that flies up in the air for a foot or so and gets everything all messy. And it can takes minutes to get a big enough pile to get the flint to catch it on fire.
Then I got one of the ebay rod type ferrocium ones. It works ok, prefer the firesteel.com one to it. But when you buy them on ebay, there are two versions. One that’s like 1/4 inch in diameter and 2.5ish inches long, and one that pretty small. It’s only maybe 1/10 or 1/8 of an inch thick. And probably 1.5 inches long. The bigger one might be 60 cents more, but buy it, it’s alot better.
My firesteel.com gobspark is 2/3 gone from just sparking it for 10-15 minutes at a time, just because it’s so fun to spark the big “globs” of metal. I did several thousand strikes on that one, and still got at least 1000 to go. But the small firesteel from ebay; I did maybe 100 strikes, and it’s half gone.
Funny thing is, I’ve only started maybe 10 fires with them all!
Thanks for the heads up! Bought five of these.
I once cut a cracked magnesium racing wheel with an angle grinder.Pile of dust at the floor ignited like a photo flash.Took some time before I figured what was going on.
I feel compelled to buy a dozen. I’m not sure why?
Funny you should say that. I bought Ten Of These last week, I felt the urge to stock up too, before this thread started.
Perhaps deep down we are sensing the approach of Armageddon. Repent ye sinners, the end is nigh!
Sintro has a good point. The firesteel.com ones throw much larger sparks then these. However there is a definite price difference between the 2 so it may not be worth it to get the firesteel.com ones.
I suppose these would prove to be quite useful in a post-apocalyptic scenario.
I had the same experience but a few years ago I went winter camping. And even though firesteel is very nice to have, it really is the pain in the ass to make a fire with sparks when everything is wet/frozen. I did succeed with magnesium bar though. As my friend once said, “firesteel only guarantees sparks, magnesium bar guarantees 5,400°F flame. Big difference.” I agree with him. I am now a fan of magnesium bar.
I always carry one with me when I go camping/hiking.
What I have started doing is just drilling holes in my mag bag and saving the filings. I have 5 or 6 film canisters full and these things will light anything on fire. :)
Good idea. I hope the canisters are airtight, because magnesium oxidizes like crazy.
Yep, I recently tested one from a year ago and it still worked fine.
I’ll try to reply later, had a 4 paragraph response type up, clicked save, and my internet went out. Well, it’s still up, but for some reason, in the past 12 hours, my data usage app has jumped from 3 gigs in just one day like usual, to a little over 30 gigs since around 11 yesterday. Haven’t downloaded anything suspicious too.
Here’s a question I remember from my almostpost. * Is there a difference in between the Doan and noname cheap mag bars?*(That you guys can see, not just say the mag is more pure)
Sintro, you may want to run your antivirus program. If that isn't it go into command prompt and type "net view" and make sure all the computers on your network are yours. I have used both the doan and the 1 dollar walmart ones and they seem identical in the magnesium but the firesteel in the name brand one works better.
