I did a search but wasn’t able to find the answer.
I built a light with an XML running 2.8 amps and an 18650 battery. I know on high it will get hot, but how hot is too hot for the battery? It got up to 120 before i turned it off.
anything higher than 60C or 140F is too hot
+1 Generally, +60C is the safe limit for Li-Ion operating temperature. Thermal runaway risk increases as the temperature gets higher than this.
Thanks for the replies. It seems like I’m within the safe limits. It shouldn’t’ be an issue since I usually won’t run it on high that long. I just wanted to test it.

Not that it is the same but the li-ion in my phone says “damage will result over 115°”
I keep my hobby charger's heat sensor shut off limit set at 40 degrees C just to play it safe. I know it's way overkill, but it's what makes me feel safe..
Setting to 40C is smart, in case the probe isn’t at the exact same temp as the cell. The probe will always be lower.
i just checked my hobby charger… the default is 45ºc
That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm always around when I charge my batteries, but you never know. It's when you're not looking things can get out of hand. I'm very careful with things that are potentially dangerous. 18650's, etc, fit that category..
