Is there anywhere I can buy a deep reflector for a AA mini mag ?? Or anything I can use for throw
A deep reflector won’t automatically make it throw, but it will make it have a more narrow spill.
Throw comes from being able to focus the hotspot tightly, so this relies on location of the emitter within the reflector.
Also the smaller the LED relative to the reflector the more “throwy” the beam profile will be. So an XP-E would be more throwy than an XM-L.
However is it a throwy beam profile you want or just good beam distance?
I run a p60 Mini Mag with modified Terralux SMO reflector and an XM-L U2. The beam is not throwy, but with well over 500 lumens being pumped out, it actually has fairly respectable beam distance.
In terms of reflector, which Mini Mag is this? I think the LED ones have a deeper head, so may well have a deeper reflector too.
And if throw is what you want, a TIR or aspheric optic might be the answer.
im looking for a nice tight spot, im working on a drop in for the mini mags. so if i can find a reflector that i can buy to offer with the kit that has a great hot spot/throw that would be nice
These will fit into incan minimags with some reshaping and trimming off the little extender ring around the base, but may not leave enough room for your pill depending on the design. Once trimmed down it ends up around .870" tall. The ring at the front end is thicker than it needs to be, so that can be shaved down too to get some extra space if needed.
The Led version of the Mini Mag AA is pretty deep, do you need something deeper?
It can be that same reflector alex but I can’t find a source that sells just that reflector
I think I know where to find them, lemme check BRB…
Here it is!
$1.50 ea. 54 on stock, Mag part number is 108-758
Whoa, thanks for that link! I've been looking for those...
Awesome thanks for the help ill buy a few and ill post my design to see if anyone would like any ect ……
The "throw" on a stock LED Mini-Mag is about the best I have seen for a 20mm reflector. As said already, a deeper reflector does not mean more throw. I would think you might be able to use the stock LED reflector with the stock LED and pump up the amperage to get a respectable 100 yard thrower, but with a very small spot. The stock LED Mini-Mag will reach about 75 yards, but it's so severely under driven that it's just not intense enough to see much at all.
An XP-E or XP-E2 might be good, pumped up to 1.5 amps or so, but heat sinking might be an issue.
With the thing I’m working on it will have a large copper slug and be able to use a deep reflector like the stock mag link of post 6, might try to squeeze room for a driver and use 14500 cells
Isn’t that a plastic reflector?
Ayup, plastic. But they work really nice with a XM-L, a much more usable beam pattern than the same reflector with the little XP-E or Rebel emitters. And if it's still using the stock unscrew-to-turn-on format, the reflector doesn't touch anything hot.
The difficulty with unscrew to turn on is the heat from the led. Where does it go? It’s possible but not easy to address.
