Yup.
Been there.
Got the scars.
Lots of them.
If you don't know what you are handling.
Don't handle it. Look up trimethymercury for what this is a good plan. And that death was someone who knew very well what she was doing.

i found a big bottle of Greased Lightning at FAMILY DOLLAR for 2 bucks :) know im soaking my DRY HOST............... Chicago X about how long did u soak ur host in that stuff ?
I soaked the body for about 45 minutes, wiped off the residue, and soaked again for about an hour.
The head and tail took about an hour longer.
Interestingly, the bezel took the longest, by far. After I thought it was done, the polishing started where it was noticed that there was still some clearish anodizing left.
It's probably good to point out that half the thickness of the ano is on the surface, half below.
another question....is there any other coating on the flashlight ? besides the black, mine looks like it is silver/grey and not as chrome looking as yours maybe i did not let it soak long enough
U have to polish after u remove the back, it is gonna look grey whe black is removed ,if u have a grinder put a buffing wheel on it an use some rouge , u can get it at home depot ,lows sears for sure
I don't know what you mean...mine came out of the solution looking sweet. A quick rinse/dry and off to pics. You did it too long, and now it's ruined.
Take a breath, I'm only kidding. You need to do exactly what J....uh...Madi05.....ummm.....Mr.BrightLights said.
Dull grey is fine, shiny grey still needs a soak.
If you don't have a grinder/buffer, you can get smaller cotton wheels to use with a drill. I start with Tripoli Brown, and finish with White or Red Rouge.
Alternately, you can wet sand with 600-800 grit, then 1000-1200, then a metal polish such as Flitz, Metaseul et al.
Funny thing ,u poked un of my name change but I should’ve mentioned another reason why,lol remember the gremlins movie , “bright lights” lol
Wow...it's been a lifetime since I've thought about that movie - a true Joe Dante classic.
Thanks for the advise, Chicago X. I will try it out with the drain cleanser.
ill post pics of mine tomorrow its awesome looking,.. shiny grey
I think it’s time to watch it again ,lol
Thanks to inspiration from Chicago, Foy has learned a great deal today.
1. all aluminum is not created equal
2. all ano is definitely not created equal
3. the type III ano on an L2P really is different/superior
The following are the results of my Greased Lightining exploits . . .
My access to a polishing wheel won't be until Monday at work so, hopefully I can improve these, especially the L2T.
The L2P is still soaking . . . that Type III ano takes way longer to come off. Also; my heads took longer to come off than the rest as well.
Gotta go check on the L2P again . . . and thanks Chicago; it's been fun expanding my knowledge.

I actually like the finish on your L2T, Foy. Very tough and purposeful looking. Much nicer than the L2P IMO.
The L2P just came out of the drink. (over three hours)
You think these will take to the buffing wheel, Chicago?
Foy
The only problem I may encounter is polishing the gnurling ,
If you use a flex wheel, or mop wheel, the knurling shines up nicely.
@Foy: Very nice job. As you have discovered, ano varies widely in quality and thickness. Your L2T is going to polish up nicely, as are the others.
Hmm the next step wil be acquiring a few gallons (litres) of distilled water, some H2SO4, a good dye, a car charger or similar high power unit some aluminium wire and a few buckets to do some nice annodizing ot he cheap yourself. L2P in exotic colors anyone? Best done outdoors with thick gloves, junk clothes and safety glasses tho. Even dyeless anodizing (natural) looks rather good.
Be sure to polish it to perfection.
I like the matte look. At least on the pictures. I wonder what it's like when in your hand.
Be careful, polished might be more troublesome to maintain.
Does polished versions suck in fingerprints and grease from the skin? The kind that's requires more polishing to wipe off, Like touchscreens on cellphones and tablets?
Imagine a nice red, electric blue or bright orange DRY, with a non crenulated bezel...possibly a copper bezel.
Foy, something about the way that L2P looks is just awesome. Looks raw in a cool way. This thread is tempting me to pull out a light and strip the anno and have some fun with it. Especially because I have access to annodizing at my college!
Maybe we should have a separate thread for this customizing seeing as its taking off. (Anno stripping, custom annodizing, DRY tailcap modifications...some pretty cool stuff going on!)
