My Brother's Work-Worn Light

Sofirn SC31b

The button used to have a grid texture on it. He says it gets washed under water frequently. The battery died but he replaced it and it is still kicking.

Ha! Poor thing looks like bobofett’s helmet. :joy:

Btw, found a picture of how the light looked originally. Pic borrowed from davestechreviews

Love Patina.
Nothing better that a tool that was used for it’s purpose and it delivered day after day.
Hate Trailer Queen classic cars for the same reason.
The factory made these things to be Used.

I had an old Heavy Time Clock like from a factory and used to just look at it, see the wear marks on it and think of every worker that stared at that sucker to hit Quitting time and slam that punch card in there fast and haul as so the next worker could do the same. Stories they could tell

Thanks for the pics and story.

Just a little extra detail, he is a boiler operator at a waste management facility. Rather than sending all the trash straight to a landfill, their facility burns it to produce power first which has two major upsides. It reduces the volume of the waste and makes the runoff from the landfill a lot cleaner since what’s left of the waste is mostly carbon. Emissions from the burning are filtered too, I asked because I was curious.

That would make a good addition to this thread:

It hasn’t seen any activity for a long time. Too bad; it’s an entertaining subject.

There’s also the question of natural, timeworn patina vs forced, accelerated patina.

EDIT: corrected the link.

Have you had a tour of the facilty? They’re fascinating. They also separate metals from the ash for recycling. The one in my region is at risk of being shut down, unfortunately.

I have! It is really fascinating. I got a personal tour that covers a bit more than you’d normally get if you were part of an official one. They also separate metals from the ash.

Why is yours being closed down? What is their plan for handling the trash going forward?

It has been a while but the tour was really neat. I remember looking through the little window into one of the burners. It was like looking into hell.

I don’t want to get into the politics of it, but the state I live in recently implemented carbon taxes and the facility isn’t exempt like landfills are. If the operator has to pay the tax it will be financially unviable. The alternative is landfills

Yea the furnaces are something else. If I was loading stuff in there I’d probably put interesting stuff near the door on purpose so I could watch how it reacted to the heat.

That’s unfortunate about the carbon taxes actually pushing progress backwards. Reminds me of the whole deal with auto manufacturers making everything big and classifying it as a light truck
