My Fenix RC40 Measurement

Just to share my finding on RC40. I got her last weekend. She out throw my TK70 and modified TN31.
Lucky for me to skip TK75 because at least RC40 outperform my TK70 and lightly modified TN31. Wonder how did Fenix set the specification for TK70 to be 130500cd where I can’t seem to get close to that number.

Below is the measurement, using TK70 as reference. Candela measurement is at distance 3meter. She is bright, really bright, I got 3800lumens on mine.

Text are in Japanese or Chinese?

Chinese. Sorry lazy to create another table in English.
Top one is lumens, second one is candela.

Sounds like a really sweet light. Congrats!!

Nice numbers, especially the lumens. Little curious about the modded TN31. What type of Kcd does it have? I would think a modded one should do better than the 124K.
Anyway, as for the 124k vs 130K, that’s not big a surprise really. Most lights are going to vary some.
And I know you don’t always agree with my claims on this - but try taking your measurements a little further out, like 10m if possible.

beamshots against the tk70?

My TN31 is modded with 4 parallel 1ohm resistor, current is estimated to be increased from 3.54A to 4.14A, output is about 1100lumens now. Candela improves from about 110kcd to 118kcd. When I compare her with RC40, she was 117kcd and RC40 scored 124kcd that night, and TK70 was about 107kcd. Basically my TK70 and original TN31 were on par, occasionally they out throw each other on meter, after modding, TN31 added another 10kcd and win all the time when compare to TK70.

I will try with 6m. I think 10m is too far for me to point horizontally towards my meter.

Will find some time to do that.

Thanks. It is giant light. Not as useful as other smaller light. I like giant light though as I don’t use my flashlight that much.

Beamshots ASAP!

yea this is still under my radar a bit. maybe after seeing some shots or videos online, it will persuade me to buying one…or not.

I am finding times to do review on this light. Will post simple beamshots gif tomorrow.

After owning lights below:
107kcd 2200lm TK70
118kcd 1100lm modified TN31
100kcd 5000lm 2xTerminator
270kcd SR95S UT

RC40 still able to make me say “Wow!”. I am very impressed.

Here are beamshots of 4 flashlights. Target is about 160m away.

RC40 still manage to show a big hotspot at this distance while flood better than TK70 looking at lower left corner. TK70 hotspot is not so clear at this distance.

love the shots, thanks for that. still very impressed by the tk70. loved that light, just recently sold it because i thought i was gonna buy the rc40 to replace it.
not totally convinced if its the one… i was hoping for a bit more lumens and throw. didnt seen like a too drastic change from the tk70 for the money difference.

You are welcomed. Below is my thought about TK70 and RC40.
If you are comparing to TK70, RC40 should be higher value if you factor in the LSD battery and good charger for TK70.
If you are comparing to TK75, then for some or many here in BLF, TK75 has higher value.
I am the very few who think RC40 has higher value compared to both TK70 and TK75.
Maybe I set my expectation not so high when flashlight get over 2000lumens and 100kcd, especially for LED flashlight. At least to me, RC40 in stock condition able to achieve 3800lumens and 124kcd are very impressive performance and worth the extra price.

Thanks for the beamshots!

You’re welcomed. 8)

how long can you run the rc 40 on turbo before it gets really hot or hot enough where its unsafe?

there is temperature protection, rc40 will drop its output from turbo to high when it detect temperature is too high. I am guessing it won’t get above 65 Celsius. For this size of heatsink, it will be very safe. My experience of RC40 is that battery tube is warm and still can be hold on when heatsink is too untouchable hot.

Hi, I finally tried 6m last week. And measurement doesn’t change much, should say remain the same. Some light get higher, some get lower number.
I am sure 3m is enough for many flashlights unless we are talking about very huge diameter reflector.
