My FW3SS -- (stainless steel) - do you have any after-market user finish idea? Please share it here

Hi guys,

I have this FW3SS just sitting around in the box.

Does anyone here have any idea how to ‘re-finish’ it?

For example, the Cu or copper version can be left to the atmospheric elements to tarnish, patina(te), etc. for uniqueness, fun… but does anyone have other ideas of any ‘treatment’ for Stainless Steel?

Posting your works and ideas are definitely welcome!

You could heat treat it.

Being a complete newbie to your idea, how do you do it? Remove everything inside first? (asking the obvious haha)

I like shiny things so I would polish it till I needed sunglasses when in the same room with it :sunglasses:

I would clean it with some kind of solvent to leave a good surface, and then heat it with a torch carefuly until it reaches the desired colour

Remove everything but the ss. Clean the light very well, wear gloves to prevent fingerprints. Heat the light with a blowtorch. Don’t hold the torch on one spot for too long, keep waving. If you have the color you want cool it down in a bucket of water.

This is how I do it, maybe others have a different technique.

Leave it standing up outside and let it rust. :stuck_out_tongue: It should weep out and run down the sides after a while. (would easily wipe off though so you’d have to coat it)
If you are anywhere near the sea it will rust, unless it’s marine grade stainless of course. The rust will be more like a stain than regular rust which eats in.

This was a SS flashlight until I put it into FeCl for a bit too long.

A bit too long and the material became porous :partying_face:

It’s too pricey to just buy the product but if you can somehow get your hands on some stainless steel blackener…. Maybe even mask it for some kind of pattern/design…?? Otherwise I think you’re stuck with bluing.

Cool mod lumenzilla! Is it still waterproof?

Looks cool ! But where can I buy that chemical? It has even different versions in my search.

Edit: What is that chemical more popularly or commonly called?

Wow Nice!

Bluing ain’t a bad idea. Bottle of Birchwood Casey ain’t expensive.

Yes, the porous hole is just on the surfaces. Inside of the tube is remain the same.

I think it’s the same as Iron Chloride, please correct me if I’m wrong.

I purchased it from electronic equipment store, used to build DIY PCB (printed circuit board).

Was the chemical brushed only on the outside or was the entire light submerged?

For how long?

Is it a hard finish? Not powdery?

Anyhow, I would like to try this as it will be more resistant to scratching from the way it looks.

It would be hard to get good looking finish with chemicals or heat treatment from the first attempt. If you don’t know exact alloy or don’t have many cutoffs of same material, you should be ready to polish it after experiments.

Common name is ferric chloride. Used to etch lots of metals. Even used to bring out Damascus look

@tatasal
It was fully submerged into the solution for about 20 minutes.
But please be cautious because the FeCl is powder and water was added, so the water & FeCl ratio will affect the timing as well.

@kiriba-ru
Yes, you’re correct. I wasn’t afraid to destroy this stuff because it was a $7 flashlight.

@contactcr
Thanks for pointing out.

@lumenzilla
So helpful of you posting the step-by-step pics!
:+1: :beer:

Keep in mind that stuff requires mask + gloves, it will stain the living shit out of anything it touches and requires special disposal (technically)
