Got two XPG2-emitters in the mail today, a 3D tint and a 4C tint (yes I am a tint-snob, I like neutrals and high CRI). So one of my lights was going to be sacrified in an emitter-swab
. So which one then? Best would be a xml-light that is not maximum powered. That is only one in my collection, a Xeno03warmwhiteXML. I had stopped liking the light anyway (too floody and I did no longer like the warm tint -spoiled by the 219
-), but the modes are current controlled and more interesting: in high it pumps 2A through the led
. I am going to change the led to a XPG2-4C.
Because it is an easy swap, and one I can imagine that could appeal to others as well, I decided to let you watch. So here we go...

1) so here it is, looks a bit weathered already, but it does have a brand new switch in place
(shame on you Xeno: switch bad!)
2) had to devise a bezel-tool, an old bicycle-part grinded down to size does the job of unscrewing it!
3) some gentle hammering (contradictio interminus?) on the table and the internals come out easily.
4) ai!! the new emitter is too big, had expected a 16mm board, but it is 14
. Have not stored the grinder away yet, so start it up again and grind the new board to 14mm (luckily the + and minus contacts are still not touching the side of the board)
5) remove the old emitter (not glued
), clean the white Xeno-thermo-stuff and put some arctic silver on the pill
6) and here it is soldered in place.
7) assembly time!
So how does it perform? Very well indeed! The light in high mode still draws 2.00A (tailcap measure) from a freshly charged TF flames 14500. The hotspot has become much tighter and brighter, but the Xeno-reflector still directs much light to the spill (when compared to the UniquefireS10). Have not measured output or throw, but the hotspot is now about the same size of the spot of my UniquefireS10 (with XREQ5), but quite a bit brighter. The tint is near perfect, colors show up vividly without the tint being too warm, but I must admit that in colour representation it is outperformed by the Nichia219.
On NiMH, the Xeno-xml had always been a weak looking light, but with the XPG2, the output and beam has become even a bit impressive!
I tried to do some ceiling-beamshots, unfortunately they do not represent reality very well (beamshot are not my cup of tea), but here they are anyway:

8) left Uniquefire S10, right Xeno03 XML-ww (it really is not that yellow!). This picture gives the Xeno a fairly tight hotspot; this is not true at all, it was floody as hell!
9) left Uniquefire S10, right Xeno03 XPG2-4C. Hot spots are the same size but the Xeno is brighter
10) left Aurora SH-00271 (Nichia219-mod), right Xeno XPG2-4C
I am happy with the Xeno03 with XPG2, it has become one of my favourites again. Perhaps there is someone out there who does this swap as well and does some real measurements on the output?
