This is meant to be a very quick look at an option to make the SK98 usable. As received, mine had two problems - a hollow pill and the driver was next-mode memory. I don’t care for zoomies all that much, but I do love the SK68 due to the brightness, simplicity and low cost. I wanted to mod the 98 keeping the above in mind and decided to make a hybrid pill. I apologize for the poor quality pics, I didn’t really set out to post anything but snapped a few pics just in case.
First, I pulled out the hollow pill…there is a lip that the emitter sits on which is easily filed off:
I then filed down a P60 brass pill as i did here :“Lanshi pill” Modding the Lethargic Lanshi LS-125 3xAA ***Beamshots added***
This time I soldered two copper US pennies to fill the pill and bring the surface level with the lip:
I used a Dremel sanding drum in a drill press to clean/square up the inside of the hollow pill, just enough so the brass pill can be forced inside:
I then assembled the goodies…I decided to use the fasttech 2 mode driver here 2 mode driver because it was simple…and I had one on hand. I used an XM-L T6 on a 14mm star as it fit the modded pill very well…and I had one on hand
I then glued the brass pill into the hollow pill using Fujik paste…hybrid pill complete!
It’s drawing 1.94A on high and has a super wide flood. Zoomed out, it throws very well…I’ll try it against some of my throwers soon and will add beamshots if anyone is interested. Otherwise, that’s it…short and sweet!
EDIT: finally getting around to adding a few zoom beamshots. I used a Nikon D40 with a 35mm prime lens at f1.8, 1/10th sec shutter speed and iso 200.
