Navy K633 - anyone have it?

The 631 seems to be passing to the wayside and the 633 taking it's spot. Does anyone have any "in hand" experience with the 633?

what happened to 632?

What you wanna know? I have the K631 and the K633 (but haven't worked a lot with this until now).

Navy K 632

This is the Navy K623. The K632 is this

Sorry!
Dyslexia with numbers, :~ I wouldn’t mind but I was looking at the 632 a while back as I fancied trying a compression lock without paying Spyderco prices, since then dodgy PM2’s have become available for about $20, doesn’t feel right though, they’re counterfeits. At least the Navy is branded as such.

I have a K633. It’s not a bad little knife (based on handling, but no real use, I have too many knives :(). Very much like a FRN Byrd Cara Cara 2 really.

+1. I edc one. Forget it's on me at times. Nice and light and lots of blade when needed.

Also have Navy 631. Bit heavy and harder to break in...but nice piece now that I've worked it over. Still prefer CC 2.

Mainly I'd like an overall impression of the 633. The 631 seemed well thought of with many reviews but the similar 633 hasn't been mentioned other than in passing.

I have several Spyderco branded knives as well as those considered as clones and "spyderfaux" with official logos and boxes. Finding decent prices on the general form factor with resonable quality as an alternative to them is my desire.

Streamer and Freman - your incite is appreciated

Could you detail out the differences more?

Thanks!

curiosity killed the cat.

I've been fairly impressed with my spyderfauxs as well as my Enlans' and SRMs'.

Ordered 3 & May order up a few more if they pass my subjective opinion.

The FRN handles are different from the Cara Cara’s pattern. A bit more comfortable in my opinion.

It has the round opening hole compared to the Byrd’s bird eye, again more comfortable.

The blade is, I think, a little more pointy.

Of course the big problem is that Navy doesn’t do a good steel, so the Cara Cara’s 8Cr13MoV is probably better.

How is the spring tension on your 633?

On the Navy 631 it is VERY STIFF compared to Cara Cara 2. Actually leaves an imprint on my thumb when depressing to close blade and I curse it every time...I don't like that.

I wonder if springs are interchangeable between CC 2 & Navy 631?

I'd change it if I knew it would fit.

I've read a few negatives on the Navy heat treatment- seems it varies by sample quite a bit. I haven't had issues with any of the clones- but I do reprofile from the start and strop daily. Thus far the clones are holding well for my use, hoping Navy is at least as good. I'm a fan of 8CR steel maybe Navy should go with it over the advertised "440C"? The Chinese makers seem to have 8CR heat treat down very well.

On my other backlocks - polishing the contact points of spring, relieving a small amount from the lock lever spring area and polishing that relieved area seems to help with stiff actuation of the lock. I have also tweaked the spring for less tension on a few. Pretty straight forward, albeit trial and error. A few have called for a bit less tightness on the lock pivot screws. Each knife is its own and require some TLC in fitting. Mine all drop free upon full press and the locks actuate quite well.

My one feels about the same as my Cara Cara 2.

I don’t know about spring swaps. I assume that there are some differences on the inside. If you take them both apart you can find out.

Bit off topic but if you buy one you’ll know that the Buck 395 Omni Hunter has the strongest backspring ever. Besides which it’s a cheap and nasty feeling riveted together POS, and no I can’t send it back - the store went down faster than, well fast. Really is a two thumb job, put me off Buck knives for good.
Sorry for that, back on track now and medication taken……………

ordered 3 3/17, 3/18 payment date, order received this a.m. 3/24(!!??) Best order completion time to date from China to Upper Midwest USA.

Initial inspection of the 3- Very positive. Fit and finish very good. Locks are all positive and snug. All drop free upon lock release. Blades sharp and wiggle free. If it matters- they are acceptably centered. Time will tell on edge holding of the "440C" blade steel. I'll say thus far I'm impressed with my samples.

My one gripe: 1 of the 3 appears to have been mislabeled as a 1556601 when in reality is a 1631401. Am in contact with support on this issue and I'm sure they'll rectify in a reasonable time frame.

Sorry, I was really busy in the last days and have some internet connection problems.
Navy 631 vs. 633:
I like both, because the quality is good, both were sharp out of the box and the handle material has a good quality, too (haven't sharped any of these until now).
If you ask which I like more: 631, because the knife with the handle is thicker (I can handle this better) and the knife shape is more elegant - getting slim). But the K633 closing more smoother. I push the backlock and the blade is falling in the same second (be careful of your fingers). If I push the lock of the K631 nothing happened - I need the second hand I use the pivot screw and open it a little bit. Now it works smoother.. It would be great, if it closed similar smooth like the K633.
I ordered 3 K633 and closed smooth, and the 4 K631 are stiffer

Buck 397-1: Push the backlock and nothing happend, but if move my hand the blade falls 70-80° and I can close it with one hand. Get it used one year ago and used it often (reason for the scratches on the blade).

Take a look at the picture. It shows the Buck 397-1 (I haven't the 395, but I think it is only the bigger brother of it and the backlock is similar), K631 and K633.

Thanks for the mini review and comparison pic Buwuve!

While waiting for the serrated model to make it to FT stateside facility, I decided to spend some time with the two fine edge models.

First a reprofile.

not a great close up but you'll get my OCD as "knuts"

Takes a nice edge and reasonably holds on to it for most knife related tasks.

The second blade had a slight ,79mm offset at the tip. Straightening isn't an option for me and I had planned a blade mod or two anyway. I love Wharncliffe blades and even better that blade with a full handle.

for scale with normal k633

of course reprofiled

it's become my left pocket boxcutter of choice at work. The edge holds as well if not slightly better than 8cr13mov.

You may have noticed the pocket clip???

The "10 minute clip" - a quick polish/de-burr, some heat for bends and color...and only the very end of handle is visible.

Thin, fairly light weight and just shy of light saber sharp. I Like em!
