Yes, it's exactly like that. Either preselect your mode, or do a full off-on cycle once it's on. It makes switching counter-intuitive and renders momentary-on almost useless. I sold my Xtar B01 because of that switch - you can get accustomed to it, but it never gets convenient, at least it didn't for me.
It's funny that manufacturers keep making lights like that even though lots of users seem to dislike it. Just have a look at this thread, almost every second post reads like "Forward clicky, but only in single mode lights".
Considering the price, I think it's ok for a non-budget-brand, especially if the anodizing is HAIII (which I forgot o ask).
A Klarus P1A for example can be head for around the same price and has only two modes (but with true momentary on and HAIII), the Crelant V11A is more expensive (at least at IOS), suffers from the same forward-clicky-problem and is only HAII. And I can't quite see the advantage of XM-L in a 1xAA light, you can't drive it hard enough to make a difference over XP-G.
I think I might order one when they are available, just to check them out. If I'm able to switch the switch (haha) it should be a winner.

Funny you mention the P1A, cause I was just going to add the Jetbeam PA10… which seems to be an eerily similar model… like maybe klarus and jetbeam share suppliers? Even the names are almost the same.
For whatever reason the P1A is selling for more though. I can find jetbeam PA10 for $30, but the klarus P1A is going for $39. Strange.
True, v11a does share the same silly switch arrangement as the WK50. It’s not ideal, but I can get used to it for my own use. I was interested in the Xtar WK50 in pink for the wife. She is not a dumb lady, I’m sure she could work it. It’s just not ideal. I can hear her calling it “annoying” already! lol
Regarding XML, the V11A is 14500/AA. As I said in a prior post, probably not the best example to compare to WK50. I must have it on the brain since I just bought one. :bigsmile:
I just googled for the price and found the Klarus P1A on Manafont for 34.96 and on dinodirect for 28.39. I've been thinking for a long time about buying one myself, I already have the P2A and I'm very, very fond of it. Just lately I decided to drop the idea and wait for something comparable with XP-G2, and now the WK50 turns up
The Jetbeam BA10/BA20 are said to come from the same factory as Klarus P1A/P2A and supposedly share the same electronics. I just don't like the clip orientation on the Jetbeam BA10.
Another competitor I can think of is the Bronte RA10, but this has the 14500 option as well. It is rather expensive (~34 USD), but from what I heard it has momentary on and switches modes by turning the head. It is also kind of ugly, though.
My only other 1xAA is the Romisen RC-G2, but it is 1-mode only and too bulky for edc.
Definitely looking forward to this one. Memory is a huge selling point. Modes are well spaced. Pricing is about right. XTAR knows what they’re doing.

93mm AA with clikie? Quite short I’d say
30 bucks… a little bit too high, unless it’s CC with no PWM. And memory is a nice extra too. Nice light overall, IMO.
The forward clicky on multiple modes kills the deal for me. Otherwise it’s a nice little AA light.
Because each time you use it for momentary ON to shine on something, the mode is changed, which is very annoying!
Well, not exactly each time. Usually if you wait a few seconds between each momentary-on use, it keeps the memorized mode instead of switching to the next. But of course you can't use it for signalling like that.
