New Compact 3000-Lumen EDC Flashlight – Real Outdoor Beamshots & Testing

I’m the developer of a compact EDC flashlight project and would love to share some real-world testing results with the community.

Our goal was simple:

Create a flashlight that delivers high output while remaining truly pocket-friendly for everyday carry.

Laboratory Test Results

High Mode:
• Measured Output: 3943 lm
• Peak Beam Intensity: 12800 cd
• Beam Distance: 226 m

Low Mode:
• Measured Output: 1055 lm
• Peak Beam Intensity: 3600 cd
• Beam Distance: 120 m

Runtime

• High Mode (3000lm): >1.5 Hours
• Low Mode (500lm): >8 Hours

Last night I took the flashlight outdoors for real-world testing around trees, pathways and riverside areas. The beam pattern, brightness and usable distance were very impressive for such a compact size.

The flashlight uses a single side switch with:
• Click: ON/OFF
• Double Click: Turbo
• 8-second memory function

I’ve attached several real outdoor beamshots below.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback from BLF members regarding the beam profile, specifications, and overall design.

Additional information:

The flashlight body length is only 136.7mm, making it easy to fit in a pocket while still using a full-size 21700 battery.

More outdoor testing photos will be shared in the coming days.

What emitter do you use?

We’re in the 6000-6500mAh era, 4500mAh is not much.

NOO!!! 6500K is useless decorative light, please do not use it.

That’s very floody, S21 series lights from Convoy are smaller and more balanced.

So it’s 500 or 1000lm? Eigher way it’s too high, low mode should be 1-5 lumens. 5-80-300-1000-3000lm.

What’s the stepdown? After how long and down to how many lumens? Thermally controlled or time controlled?

compact is different for everyone, and my first thought is that many people here wont carry the smallest 21700 light. for example we have the Emisar D3AA, gives us floody 1500lm in a tiny 14500/AA host. some reasons its such a popular light: variety of LED options, customize the CCT and CRI etc, amazing ramping UI for ANY brightness within >0.1lm to 1500, efficient boost driver, clean triple TIR beam, dual fuel, and its comparatively a tiny light.
i can also get the Emisar D4K, up to 5K lumens (that doesnt mean you should also aim for more lumens), has a great efficient driver option, is just as floody as your light. And i can pick a nice cozy warm emitter option. And its still smaller than yours. especially the head, what is the head diameter?

youll do better by providing not-6500k leds, at least 5000k or provide a few options. high-cri is very nice too. give it a good buck or boost driver, and a reasonable mode spacing. a good low mode is around 10lm, (with a lower moonlight 1 or lower), a sustainable medium id aim for at least 500, high and turbo.

one thought i have is of the Fireflies E04 Surge. wonderful ramping interface, buck or boost driver, good modes, good moonlight/low mode, sustain ~800lm, usbc, warm and hi cri led options, 21700. it should be about the size of yours. BUT it is pretty expensive, so you could drop the price, but you would still have to compete with Convoy, which HITS in the LED, driver, and form/size, with not-the-best but very useable UI and modes, all for being the cheapest hobby brand.

Great questions. It’s unclear what OP is trying to create that doesn’t already exist.

Going off the listed specs, it is quite conceivable that the Convoy S21E with LHP531 or SFT42R 5000K is preferable in every department:

  • better tint
  • more throw
  • better UI (Anduril)
  • 20mm shorter
  • 47 grams lighter

And this doesn’t lend much credibility:


Very much appreciate the effort. My feedback is to do a lot more research on the existing market to get a sense of what people want and what’s missing. It’s easier to provide more specific feedback once you’ve done that and come up with a more convincing proposal.

It looks like we have 4 round LEDs (SFT-25R?) in 4 small reflecors:


I would struggle to agree that a light that weights more and is larger than a TS28 is compact.

I saw this while browsing KS but passed as there’s no mention of emitter, and it looks like it’s just another cool-white quad emitter light with meh output.

Also the only reason I clicked on the kickstarter page in the first place is this image.

It looks a lot smaller in this image than the dimensions indicate and would suggest a tailswitch, your light does neither of those things.

Pairing a quad emitter configuration with throwy emitters and OP reflectors doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Compared to a more powerful single emitter, you get

  • Much less throw for the same head size, and
  • Worse beam shape.

It’s unclear what this design is trying to get at: certainly not a thrower, not enough output to compete with flooders in its size class, too cool and too low CRI for a general purpose light, and too unwieldy an UI (500/1000lm low) for most tasks. It feels like not much research has been done to get a sense of the state of the art.

You raise some valid points.

The comparison image was intended to illustrate the overall size of the flashlight rather than suggest a tail switch design, but I understand how it could be interpreted that way.

Regarding the emitter information, that’s a fair criticism. I’ll update the thread with more technical details including the emitter type, runtime data and additional photos of the flashlight itself.

As for the term “compact”, our goal was to create a pocket-friendly 21700 flashlight with a balance between output, runtime and portability, although I understand that some members may compare it differently against lights such as the TS28.

I appreciate the feedback and will continue sharing more testing data.
