New Flashlight Wiki!

I've been working on CPF's Wiki for a while, adding a lot of information to it. But it always gets hit by spam and vandalism and the admin there has locked some pages (like the main one) and does not allow images. Nor has she done anything effective to stop the vandalism or accept help from people who could do so. They really got creamed last week and about half the pages are still broken.

So now I have created my own Wiki! I have started with a lot of the same pages as from CPF (95% or more written by me, so it's not like I'm stealing). And now pictures are enabled as well which I think will be a big help in some places.

I'd love to have input or help writing and updating pages, but in order to make changes you will have to register as a user and then be confirmed (let me know when you sign up!). I just don't want to waste time fighting spam, so that is how I will control it for now. Once you are confirmed you can change anything you want.

I will leave the pages in place at CPF's wiki, but won't be updating them anymore so the latest info will be at the new site:

http://flashlightwiki.com

I really hope people find it useful and feel free to sign up and add to it and make it a great resource for everyone!

Very nice Ted! And I'm glad you got that domain name, not some unreasonable chinese product hater. I added you to the related sites block.

Thanks, man! That saved me the trouble of asking you to do it. I really appreciate you posting the link (didn't expect you to put it first though!).

Sasha never censored anything I wrote at her Wiki, but I was always a little nervous. Being my own admin means I won't have to worry about it and lets me do a little more with it than Sasha would have ever let me do. I hope people will feel free to jump in and help out because to get a really good Wiki takes more than one person.

My pleasure, I'm glad you took the initiative to set it up. It's really a pleasure these days with all the superb open source CMS / Wiki software out there.

If I have time in the next few weeks I'll try to put together a page on how flashlights work as a system.

Basically batteries->electronics->emitter->optics.

That would be great! I kind of cover the basics on the Flashlight Basics page under Getting Started.

For people who aren't confident in English and don't want to write anything up, you can still be a big help by letting me know how to make the site more useful or correcting/updating information on new lights under Flashlight Manufacturers. I don't think I can list every Ultrafire and Uniquefire model of light, but the higher end brands tend to have a manageable number of flashlight models. Of course, the more information you put out there, the more there is to maintain and keep up-to-date.

I love the fact that MediaWiki is free software. Setting up the site only cost me $6 to buy a domain name from GoDaddy. That's about the price of a pair of batteries.

woow! this is a great idea! is it possible to make a multi-language platform (something like wikipedia)?

I can help to translate it to spanish, and I think people of all around the world will help to translate it to their languages...

That would be fantastic to support other languages. I'll see what it takes to do that. Some of the stuff on Wikipedia involves some pretty advanced stuff that isn't included in WikiMedia by default.

Simplest way would be to put Google Translate links like they do in ForoLinternas. It works well enough to figure out what people mean and gives you multilanguage capability essentially "for free".

Feel free to add any of my stuff that is of use.

Great idea! I wouldn't be surprised if there were quite a few lurkers who would like to contribute but feel slightly intimidated by the technical lingo, abbreviations and have you so this should come in really handy. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to try and contribute some pictures over the holidays.

Wow, a huge "Thank You" to brted for this new page...

Very well done sir! Beautifully organized and detailed, with your usual flourish for attention to detail. Must have taken you forever to compile all that information. We should all try to keep this table up to date. In fact I should do so from now on whenever I make a review sticky.

That's awesome brted! All in 1 place and very easy to use.

Thank you very much!

Ted for President! Good job... Although, with the weather you're getting now, you should have plenty of time indoors to work on those other languages :)

(Everyone else - Atlanta is getting an extremely unusual 5" snow... all I'm getting here in Charleston is freezing rain )

Raining a lot here too... but 80 degrees F!

I like the snow, but it usually doesn't last. However it isn't supposed to go above freezing today, so it will be tomorrow before any of it goes away.

Dear brted:

Thank you very much for creating the Flashlight Wiki and so much content on it.

I wonder if you could please enable the ParserFunctions extension that was included in the copy of MediaWiki that you downloaded? Extension:ParserFunctions - MediaWiki step 4.

(You can also do step 5 if you like. I recommend it.)

I noticed you were needing that, so I enabled Parser Functions. After reading your post above I went ahead and did step 5 as well.

Thanks for helping out on the wiki and welcome to BLF!!!

Hi Brted. Thank you for continuing to update the wiki.

I see you also re-enabled ParserFunctions and restored the {{cite web}} templates I added to your “Mag Instrument” article. I would have been fine if you didn’t do these things, but they were kind of you to do; thank you.

I propose that we decide on one standard footnote style. It’s a small thing; but small things can help make a wiki look professional and trustworthy. The two possibilities are:

  • A space before every footnote marker. (1)
  • No space before any footnote marker.(1)

I prefer “no space”, since it matches the marker style used in printed books and articles. Dear brted, what do you prefer?

Thanks Ted for all your good work on this.

And still updating it after 2.5 years.

Keep up the good work!

Can someone add “sinkpad” to the Terminology section?

Thanks,
Jim
