New generation of Osram Oslon Black infrared leds, Edit: another major upgrade, link in post#14

I don't know if it was spotted yet, I came across it on the Osram site. Supposedly 30% more output (48% efficiency ), for aspherics users: it looks like the led die is one piece instead of two (less ugly hotspot), and there's a 90 deg version (I think that is the one in the picture above). The site has no information on the Vf.

I did a quick scan, it seems not for sale yet.

It even comes with David Hasselhoffs face stamped on the back

New Black Oslon! Nice.
Datasheets are up. SFH 4715A

Forward voltage (IF = 1 A, tp = 10 ms): typ 1.65v, max 2.1v
Forward voltage (IF = 2 A, tp = 100 μs): typ 1.9v, max 2.5v

big improvement in output and no more dark center. but still has the anode and thermal pad connected. aaarrrgghh. |(

edit: not sure if it actually more powerful. reading the data sheets the 4715s puts out a maximum of 1030 mW and the 4715A puts out a max of 800 mW. The press release has conflicting information.

What’s the lowest voltage 7135’s run at? With that low of vF you could possibly (using a 13V, the low voltage version of 13A) and run a linear driver from a energizer L91 with one. I don’t know what the min voltage for 7135’s is but a FET should be able to handle it even if 7135’s can’t run that low.

Per spec sheet
Supply voltage range 2.7V ~ 6V

Interesting. Waiting to find one for sale.

My oslon ir-light runs on a well-heatsinked 7135driver, I use LiFepo-batteries in it. (actually I don't use the light, have no use for it, I wanted to make a ir-camera by removing the ir-filter from a 808-camera, but I never did it)

I noticed that different led providers have different data for 4715S model 800, 1030, 1070 mW.

So if we assume that manufacturer rated 1030mW specs for 4715S model are correct this new 4715A 800mW IR emitter will just be replacement for weaker 4715 630mW model.

So nasty middle hole will remain and plenty of guys will still burn this expensive emitter if they will not read specs carefully

It would be nice to know how to make 4715S host positive.

Reverse the battery and rewire the driver for host positive.

I am stupid and I don't know for sure how should I rewire driver?

I think that even Djozz used AA for this emitter which is good but metal to metal contact would be better with more stable output.

On the driver, your switching anywhere ground and positive contact the host or battery.
Prevent the driver ground ring from contacting the host body. Cover over with kapton or tape. Create a new contact ring over top and connect to driver positive. Cover center positive on the driver, place a contact plate or spring there and connect to driver ground.

Thanks for answer... I am sure someone will try that.

Looks to complicated for me. Looking forward to see such mod...

Probably be near impossible, best bet would be eagle/OSHPark

Osram has a new update on this led, giving it a whopping 70% more output, if I have read it right.

Some specs for these new ones (the partnr. has an 'S' added):

Technical data for SFH 4715AS/SFH 4716AS:
Package size 3.85 mm x 3.85 mm x 2.29 mm / 3.85 mm x 3.85 mm x 1.51 mm
Optical output at 1 A 1.37 W
Centroid wavelength 850 nm
Efficiency typically 43 %
Thermal resistance max. 9 K/W
Beam angle 90° / 150°

Dear lord...

This will be killer. If that is true for example 30mm aspheric will have about same performance as old 4715s with 50mm ones.

very cool. thanks for digging that up. now we need a big chip IR LED

Anyone know where we could get them? It seems that RS is out of stock. Mouser has 90 EURO shipping even if you order only 5 pcs :)

I have bought this led IR OSLON Black ( SFH 4715AS ), but i cant know what is the maximum current i should run it at like the XM-L2 maximum current is 3A i am not talking about overdriving just the normal maximum current

This is its Datasheet

Per datasheed forward current is 1500mA at Vr of 1Vdc, so the manufacture “rated” is 1.5A at 1Vdc, but you know how we like to push things here at BLF…you can go higher, but just remember, more power makes more heat and heat = the enemy to LED’s
