Per an email I received from Battery Junction Olight is now offering new versions of their S series lights, the S10R, S15R and S20R. These are versions which include a recharging base and allow recharging of the internal battery without removing it from the light. The tail cap magnet still is there and helps keep the light in contact with the charging base. There are two charging contacts on the tailcap of the light. A rechargeable battery is included with each light. I hope that the lights include isolation circuitry so the contacts being bridged by something metallic and conductive in a pocket will not cause a problem.
Thanks for the link!
$15 price premium for the S20R over the S20 is totally not worth it…
Well it does include a battery but I tend to agree with you.
Also of note is that the switch is lower profile now too, which I’m not a fan of. It will have less accidental activations, but that hasn’t been a problem at all for me.
S20R would be an OK deal for entry level buyer into the 18650 flashlight world or perhaps the frequent traveler. But for those flush with chargers and batteries not much to praise.
I’m curious how the charging is handled in conjunction with the magnetic tailcap. Is there any possibility of causing a short by bridging the two charging contacts, or is the charging circuitry contained inside the light?
Do the batteries still go in + towards the head with no carrier? I dont see how that could work.
I’m the demographic these are aimed at; so far I’ve been keeping to US-common batteries and Eneloops because I’m too lazy to source all of the different things I’d need to get into more exotic batteries. An all-in-one package, especially from a respected manufacturer like Olight, is really tempting despite the pricetag.
I’ve only got 1 olight but i’m very happy with the quality. I1 Eos! Have a Mini 2800 on the way though.
