That is good, I like the direction you are taking, but it would be even better if you made D cells like that, D cells are much more common and widely used than C cells. I hope you have it in works, I’d definitely get a dozen. Sure I can use C in a sleeve, but D would give more runtime, also there are 2AA-D adapters already. But i would think you can put more power in a D than 2 AA have combined.
This seems like a good idea. What cell are you using for the internal LiIon cell? My first thought was that perhaps it was two of the cells used in the AA ones in paralell.
I also would love to see something in the “D” size, especially if the capacity can be bumped up close to 9 Ah.
Is there a reason why rechargeable c batteries always have such a low capacity? C batteries have roughly triple the volume of AA and these don’t even have double the capacity of the xtar 4300 AAs.
Not all of them scale up. alkaline, nicd, nimh all have same difference in capacities, C is double the capacity of AA, and D double the capacity of C.
However 26500 has 3 times the capacity of 14500. So it is possible with li ion, but my guess their goal is to replace alkaline cells, hence their cell capacities mimic alkaline cells.
I have EBL D 1.5li ion, and they are rated around 5ah, only a little better than c from xtar, yet the internal volume is double of C. So overall they are not that bad. hopefully xtar will increase capacity, thou i’d rather see higher current, but it is just me.
I have quite a few EBL D NiMh cells. They test at maybe 75% of rated capacity. Fortunately the 20 or so Xtar 1.5V cells have tested much closer to rated capacity.
Where did you find the EBL D 1.5V cells?
I am still curious to know what is inside these new Xtar C cells.
Iirc Ebay, I can not even be sure they are real, could be fake too, I never measured actual capacity, but they are rated 10 000mwh, which normally means mah are half of that.
That’s the thing, they should at least somewhat scale up. According to Wikipedia, alkaline c-cells get up to 6000mAh. Tons of folks advertise 5000mAh hour Nimh lsd c cells. I’d guess that the lack of scaling is due to the smaller market size for c-cells relative to AAs causing manufacturers to not optimize their processes as much, but for liion when you’re just taking a standard cell size and putting a voltage regulator on top, I’d expect better. Otherwise I can’t imagine that the market for high self-discharge lowish capacity c-cells that run at 1.5v is that large (high capacity, 1.5v, high self discharge sure; but at lower capacity I’d think you’re leaving a huge amount of the market behind).
There aren’t any 3aa-d on the market today that can handle half decent current, those that are available have thin springs, for anything over 1A they have too much resistance. a decade ago I made my own with 1aa holders that have flat springs and are able to handle current, Digi key, mouser sells those, it is not hard to make a 3aa-d using those in either configuration. Five Mega from cpf used to make crazy good adapters, but no more, nor they were cheap, iirc 30 bucks a piece or something close, but they could take 10A easy.
I think that a D-type of 1.5V LiIon cell will sell better than a C-type.
Including the most recent impulse purchase of the Missus, there are only two devices with a C-type battery in the house.
And I’m pretty sure the older one even predates the alkaline era.
The C and D large batteries may not be as popular as AA or 18650/21700, but they still have a place in certain applications, such as some flashlights, lanterns, radios, portable radios, pet feeders, and industrial equipment. Do you still use C or D batteries often? What devices are they in, and have you switched any of them to rechargeable ones? Thanks for your comments.
I have several radios that use D cells. Also C and D cell Mag lights. For the D cell Mag lights (both 3 and 4 cell) I have been using NiMh cells.. This is because I changed them to relatively high power LEDs. Alkaline cells can’t supply the current. I would consider some of your D cells. Depending on the max current draw available.
The radios should be fine with them. But I still worry about the self discharge. I can leave alkaline cell in them for years and still depend on having power for an emergency when I need it. Without having to remember to top the cells off every 6 months.
