I’m finding ordering new arrivals at DX may not be the best thing to do. They are less likely to actually be available.
I ordered a zoomie from the last round of new arrivals and it’s been in “waiting for supplier” for the last 20 days. As a matter of fact I just canceled my order today for that reason.
Actually all the zoomable lights are about the same throw-wise.
The XR-E is a very old emitter, but has a very small die size which is great for aspherics.
The XP-E is more efficient and newer, but fatter.
The XP-G is even more efficient and even fatter
The XM-L is even more efficient and driven harder, but even fatter.
I guess you can see the pattern. ;-) So while an XM-L floods like crazy if driven decently, its throw will still be subpar. Ditto with the XP-G and XP-E to lesser extends. So the increase in brightness is really overshadowed by the increase in die size.
[in addition, the newer emitters put out more lumens to the SIDE vs the XR-E, and these lumens are basically lost since aspherics don't really have any reflector on the sides.]
If you have a big fat reflector, the die size isnt as much of a problem. But with these tiny plastic aspherics, yeah...its a problem.
Your best bet is to find one like on Shiningbeam that uses an XR-E with an R2 bin code. The R2 puts out 50% more light than the only Q3 bin.
