I ship and receive quite a few things with First-Class. Things will just be delivered a day or two later if it even happens. Will it make that big of a change(either service or cost savings wise)?

That sucks, I love Saturday mail…especially when there’s a padded envelope from the Far East. Crap.
Parcels will still be delivered on Saturday… and maybe Sunday!
They should… they charge parcel rates for them.
Does not happen till August, if it ever happens. The jerks on "the hill" will probably change it, the day before it happens.
I wish they would to to a four day week, to cut costs, but then those four days would be overwhelming for the sorters and delivery people. Also, since Parcel Post is gone and Standard mail is now a few cents short of Priority, they just need to drop standard mail all together. They also ought to drop media mail as well. That would give them some money right there.

You could pay for platinum express post, and all you get is next business(aka. week) day delivery.
Just gotta find something else to do on weekends.

The best thing that they would do would be to allow us to opt out of “junk” mail.
I do like their speed and rates for delivering packages however. It’s usually the fastest and cheapest of all the options for me.
They need to charge more for the crap advertising that gets stuffed in my box instead of the real mail. They’ve forgotten why the postal service was created.
I agree with the sentiment, but if we want to help USPS, we should be trying to get more junk mail.

If they can do that without hurting their budget, then I'd support it too. I don't think it would though. Junk mail is why they're able to afford to visit every mailing address most days of the week, even when there's nothing to pick up or deliver.
Privatize? No, hell no. That would be a disaster! My mail shipped by the someone like UPS and FedEx Monkeys? The ones who steal the packages, throw the packages, stomp on them on purpose, piss on them and god knows what else? Oh, NO. Do not privatize this. I never ever ship UPS or FedEx and if I get anything from them (which is almost always damaged), I force them to stand there while I look tha package over and if it is damaged (90% of the time), I take a photo and refuse it and send the photo off to the one who shipped it to me.
They need to just go to one type of mail service and that's all. First class for letters and under 12oz. Do away with media mail and all that junk. Just Proirity mail. One service, one set of rates, plain and simple. Just drop all the different classes of package mail. Think of how much money would be saved by just having only Priority Mail. All that sorting goes away. Lost and lots of revenue made by bringing the price of media mail back up to where it should be. One set of rates for first class letters and one set of rates for everything designated as a "package over 12 oz.".
Take a look at this, and you get a good idea of what happens if junk mail goes away. Junk mail barely bothers me because it's so easy to throw away. The only time it was a nuisance at all was when I only had a PO box and picked up mail every few weeks, which overloaded my box and I had to go to the counter to pick up a box or two of mail.
The main reason the volume of junk mail is going down is electronic advertising. Spam email. Forum spam. Banner ads. Paid search result placement. There's many other types of electronic spam, and that will only increase.
Very true. Every industry has to adjust with changing competition. Not many buggy whips made today, but those made should still meet customer needs relative to their willingness to pay.

The major missing component that doesn’t get enough attention is streamlining the expenses so that higher profit services are MORE efficient to solidify and grow that segment.
Fire some middle management and have rank and file take on their work where possible. If they won’t, then make changes there, too.

DHL and Fedex are private businesses. Do you always pay their shipping fees for your chinese flashlights instead of the standard "free" service that goes through USPS? If you want something that's different from UPS, Fedex and DHL, don't demand that USPS be like them.
Most every company in the US went through that years ago, also. Was done to get such liabilities on book so that valuations were more fairly stated in company financials. The goal was to force companies to put their money where their promises were - or be more honest about they could competitively afford. USPS is WAY behind the curve on this.
On average, non-gov companies did a LOT to trim their retiree debt . . . I suspect the admin and legislature are throwing money at it rather than engage with the problem off too rich promises for their current business model. We had large stable clients that also were forced to face the too rich promises they hadn’t funded. Most companies had to put the debts on books fairly quickly. There were a LOT of different strategies, but few in a stressed, competitive business funded high for all of their projected off-books debt. But in most cases every stake-holder (customers, employees and retirees, and investors) took a hit.
