Nobody wants our little lathe :(

It’s a sad fact that nobody wants large machine shop equipment these days.

As a last resort, I put my Fathers’s Coborn Mondial lathe on ebay to try to find it a new home, but alas, it only attracted one timewaster who bid and won, despite having no means by which to collect it.

If only it could be transported instantly across the pond to OL’s workshop. The only option left now is the scrap man unfortunately.

Sad times. I remember this beast arriving when I was a child. It’ll do 5ft between centres!

Hi heyho. You have a magnificent old machine there. It would be a shame to see it go to scrap. I hope you find a good home for it before this happens.

If only I had the transport and a place to work on it.
It’s criminal to see it go to waste, maybe contact schools, colleges etc. and donate it if you can’t get any money for it.
On a brighter note if it does go to scrap you could get a fair few quid.

Ouch, that sucks. :frowning:

Sorry to hear that… I would love to use a lathe like that.

my grandpa still has L5 cnc machine on his workshop and still functional until now

Just what Gords1001 needs. Don’t scrap that fine piece of machinery by any means. I sure you will find a buyer that will give you at least scrap value. I have a wood lathe smaller than that one and it took four strong men to move it and it wasn’t easy. I would say eight to twelve men or a tractor for that one.

Stuff it in a padded envelope and send it to me… Free shipping expected, of course… J)

That's perfect for gords, you can't scrap it... I'll be turning in my grave if you do and I'm not even dead yet!

Try asking local colleges, they rarely say no

I'd take it if it was in Germany. What a beauty!

Ugh. If it was anywhere here in the states I would come get it.

Just echoing others, it would be a shame if a home can't be found for such an old beast.

As others have said it would be a shame for this to go unused.

Do you have a local FreeCycle group? Put an ad up; you never know, you might get a bite.

What a shame! If only you were near me. :(

My school gets a lot of donations from all the manufacturing companies around here(SE WI). We have this HUGE lathe Harley donated last summer. It’s 3 point chuck can probably fit a 1.5 foot diameter bar. Unfortunately, we have no use for it…so we’re going to sell it. I’ll try taking pictures of all our old industrial equipment. I finally have a smart phone(S4) so I really will try

The only new equipment we have is small stuff like miter saws or inverter tig machines. We have old bridgeports and lathes, those things just keep on ticking. My shop classes have really made me appreciate old tools. It would be a shame if you scraped that beauty!

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

The buyer has just contacted me again, after 2 weeks of silence, and the eBay sale now cancelled. I think he’s a joker.

Local college is an idea. If it went on freecycle it would likely be scrapped anyway!

sorry to hear about the difficulty finding a taker for the lathe, it looks fantastic. To be completely honest though, even if I was in the UK I wouldn’t be able to take it simply because of lack of space. Old iron like this really deserves to be used properly and this would be way overkill for most hobby machinists. Hope you find someone who can do it justice!

Or even try universities, Filton college has an engineering department and i expect Bristol and UWE has too…

hmmmmmm…….no, I really shouldn’t but how much and what length is the bed?

You should write a letter to James May. Maybe he will put it in the Man Lab.
