Non rechargable lithium cells for keeping in a car

Id like to keep the new version of the maglite ml300lx in the car but I know alkalines leak pretty easily, I’ve had it happen to me too.

I’m thinking of getting one of those AA to D cell converter things, and put Energizer lithiums instead on alkalines in the light.

Is this likely to still catch on fire and burn my car down in the summer?

This is in south Louisiana, it gets 110 degrees in the summer here pretty regularly, I’m sure the inside of the car will be hotter than that.

That being said,I’m not planning to keep the light in direct sunlight, probably trunk.

Thanks

energizer L91 ultimate lithiums are great for high temps, they are good until the wrappers melt. never heard of them catching fire in a car.

I have been using energizer L91 ultimate lithium’s for over 15 years. They are absolutely the best option for alkaline replacements (non rechargeable.) They never leak, they never self discharge, and they last 5 x longer than alkaline equivalent.

What you want to do will absolutely work but you lose too much run time using 3 x AA over 3 x D.

I keep a 3D Maglite in the car as well. I make it a point to change the 3 x D batteries every 3 x years. Never had a leak.

A great alternative to what you want to do is to use the Energizer Vision HD Ultra LED 1800 Lumen Flashlight. This is 1800 lumens, about the same size as a 3D Maglite, and it takes 9 x AA batteries, Incredible light for the $15 sale price. You can easily find it for that price.

I leave NiMH in the car.
Eneloops or Ikea NiMH are what i recommend.

I keep several devices powered by alkaline AA cells in my car all year around, so far i have not had any issues with duracells.

Yeah, I’ve thought about that as well. Ive been looking at nitecore ea42 which uses 4x AA

I think I might go with that, plus I like having a headlamp too for changing a tire, been looking at fenix hp12

Thanks for all the replies

we install our maglite cells reversed.
so….seven years from now…
just open up and reverse.
no leaks. full power.
yes, seven years.
it is a long story.

How is it some people never seem to have alkaline leaks……and other people see them as alkaleak bombs?
If I was going to take a WAG estimate I’d say 3-5% of the alkaline I’ve used over time have leaked. It seriously sucks when a nice clock, remote control, or other device is destroyed by them.

There is no such thing as alkalines that never leak, just people that have not waited long enough. It’s a feature all alkalines have.

Yeah, I don’t even bother with Alkaleaks, especially since Eneloop 1900mAh last as long or longer and will never leak.
I leave primary lithiums for maximum emergencies.

i had many leak, it is correctly mentioned that time is a factor, but it is not the only one factor, i seem to almost never have any leak in a car, even thou temp in cars parked outside in NY varies greatly, however at home\office, i have plenty leak in low drain devices, like clocks and remotes.

What exactly does installing the cells backwards in a maglite do to help?

I agree, I can see twisting the tail cap, I can see removing the batteries, but installing them backwards?

If you are going to remove them with the intention of installing them backwards, then why not just keep them out of the light altogether?
